No RAID5,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: StarTech.com External Sata Multi Raid HD (Electronics)
Despite being listed in the specs, this unit will not do a RAID 5 configuration. It will do JBOD, RAID 0, RAID 1 or RAID 10. The management utility is tiny and has very few options. I went out to the company's site and downloaded the latest software/firmware, but there are no discernible differences.
As an external RAID array it functions as you would expect. The transfer rate over eSATA is blazing fast, and it runs quieter than I was expecting (about as loud as an idle XBox360). The 80mm rear cooling fan has a separate on/off switch, for quieter (though much warmer) operation. I've been running it for two months with no issues. It's a good budget unit for some quick redundant storage, but I probably wouldn't recommend it for someone who is wanting a serious RAID array. UPDATE: I see the unit's description has been updated and no longer claims RAID5 capability.
