Customer Questions & Answers

Customer Reviews

I have two monitors hooked up with different resolutions on each one and they are working well.
John Puopolo
The video card is below basic so your extra screen can only really be used for email and word but if you watch video it is choppy.
Manuel E.
Anytime my computer goes to screen saver the third monitor changes back to a duplicate screen rather than extended screen.

So I'm currently using this at work to add a 3rd monitor as an extended desktop to my other two. I have to say with Windows XP at least the set up is really quite nice and easy. Lots of options for cloning or extending and a great deal of control over which monitor is which.

One interesting thing that is worth mentioning is that you can have up to 6 of these. That means 6 additional monitors can conceivably be added to your current set up should you ever have a desire for such a thing (although I personally would hate it as I'd never be able to find my cursor). Now you can only do one monitor per device you buy. If you DO want to do 6, you'll have to buy 6 of these.

It also allows you to add a VGA port to a device that doesn't have one. Why do I care about this? Well...it sure would be nice to play video files on my Dell Duo (tablet/netbook) on my HDTV. Since it has no HDMI, VGA, or DVI port natively, this would allow that. I'm sure you can think of other devices with this same issue...

An additional point of interest for some - normally when you clone monitors in Windows you have to set both monitors at the same resolution. Further it means you have to go with the resolution of the worst monitor as a max and that mixing monitors of differing aspect ratios will yield weird results. (for instance, if you have a monitor that's capable of 1920x1200 and one that can only do 1280 x 1024, you'll have to run both at 1280x1024 or less). This device allows you to clone monitors...at different resolutions! If you don't need this...you don't care. But if you do, you KNOW what a huge deal this is!

The USB additional monitor device works good with excellent picture quality. Don't expect high performance graphics to be the best. For general computing it is good. Important note: This device is powered from the USB connection. That mean without an external power source, if your USB port is not up to full power or you are using a pcmcia card, the device will not operate properly.

Install the drivers from the included CD then connect your USB adapter and that it. Works well. Like other reviewers stated it does sometimes forget it position or suddenly thinks it should be mirrored instead of extended. Only seems to happen when waking from being asleep. I am currently using it with a Dell Laptop. I now have 2 full sized monitors as well as the laptops built in screen. Makes work easier. Also recommend a free app called MultiMon Taskbar, which gives you a taskbar on all monitors and has some other great features like a clipboard history function. Over all I am very satisfied with this product. Don't expect to play any games on it where you are concerned with FPS. But for work it is an easy perfect solution. I use it mostly for looking at documentation and running RDP sessions.

I tried video cards and other products that claimed to do what this one does, but none of them worked. The StarTech USB/VGA adapter was easy to load/setup, and once activated I had both monitors showing what I needed in 5 minutes. This unit works great, and I'm recommending it to anyone who needs to run a "two screen" application of any sort. I'm running Pro Tools and needed to split the screen so I can follow all the applications without having to constantly close this, minimize that, etc.

This is perfect if you ever want to connect more than one monitor to your laptop. Its not meant for gaming or any kind of high visualization effects but if you just need it to do two things at once like look at a report and compare results than it's perfect. Its really well priced and it comes with everything you need. All you have to do in your part is make sure you have a VGA cable coming from the monitor to hook up to the adapter.

This video adapter is great for adding a 2nd/3rd display to your laptop. The refresh rate isn't great, but its more that adequate for business applications. It even works well enought for video chat. Overall, I've been very happy with the device. It also comes with a helpful app that allows you to move the screen a window is displaying on by hitting ctrl + screen# (something Windows 7 should provide out of the box).

Exactly what I needed. Used to add 3rd monitor using Windows XP. Arrived early, followed instructions and within 15 minutes was up and running. Have already recommended to co-workers.

I purchased an all in one HP Touchscreen computer with Windows 8 which was does not come with any plug-ins except USB and I can't function without dual monitors, but with great hope I knew there was something out there to do the job. I checked the StarTech.com website and saw they have a Windows 8 update which I haven't found yet on many other adapters so I jumped up and down for a minute from my excitement then purchased the adapter at what I thought was a fabulous price on Amazon and even had it overnighted. Let's just say I would have paid 3 times as much if the thing actually worked. I've had it for 3 days and have had nothing but problems. It has only worked twice and it locked my brand new all in one computer up so bad yesterday that I couldn't even get it to come up until today (thank goodness for my laptop!) All the other times I've tried to get it to work have been spent constantly plugging, crashing, restarting, unplugging, plugging, crashing, restarting, unplugging, plugging, crashing, restarting... you get the picture. I have installed and reinstalled the software several times and each time I try to get it to work I cross my fingers and toes, say a prayer, hold my breath, close my eyes and make a wish and hope with all my might... only to be disappointed again and again. The next best thing I know to do is to order the HP adapter which unfortunately isn't sold by Amazon and it costs a bit more, but hopefully I'll get what I pay for and as long as it works I don't care. Oh yes, and I have called the Startech customer service several different times only to get voicemails instead of actual people and they don't call you back so what's the point?! A word to the wise...Read more ›
