This cable works as advertised if you install it in the correct order. You have to plug the cable into the USB port without the printer attached first. This allows Windows 7 to detect the cable and assign the drivers properly. Once the cable is fully recognized, then you can plug in the printer.

I rebooted my PC just to be on the safe side before plugging in the HP Laserjet printer I had. Once you plug in the printer, you have to assign it to the USB Printer port on the list as that is the new driver from the cable setup. Don't select the Parallel Port and you should be fine. If you need to load the Laserjet's printer driver separately, you can do that, but just select the USB Printer as the local port.

Once that is done, it works great and allows you to keep that older parallel printer around with the newer laptops and desktops. My setup was running an HP laptop with Windows 7 64Bit operating system.

If the setup was truly plug and play, I would have given it 5 stars. But it wasn't too tough to figure out as many of the other reviewers experienced something similar.

After searching for days to find a USB to parallel option that works with Windows 7, I finally found this one. My First choice was a PCIe card with a parallel output that works with W7, but that was a dead end, so I figured how hard can it be to find an adapter like this one that WILL work with W7. It was a long time in coming, but THIS ONE ACTUALLY WORKS. Thank you StarTech.

Windows 7 64 bit will fail to find the driver automatically. The drivers package on the support site won't install on windows 7 (looks like it got updated last in 2004). So, no go on 64 bit windows 7. Likely works on vista/NT/2000/98 - drivers for these were on the install CD.

Worked perfectly the first time. Once it was plugged in windows did the rest. The only thing that through me for a look is that I was kind of expecting to plug it directly into the printer but instead I it plugged into the existing parallel cable.

I used this adapter cable to connect an old dot matrix printer to a new PC. I am not replacing the DOT matrix dinosaur with a laser jet, but this cable worked perfectly thus far.

I bought a new laptop a little over a month ago and it had no DB25 port, which I need for my work. I bought this product hoping it would solve my problem. The installation was simple, all I had to do was plug in the cable and windows 7 recognized it and installed the driver. I didnt even need the disk that came with it. The problem is it didnt really solve my problem because the device I attached to it (Xilinx parallel 3 programming head) would not work. This may work for a printer, but I dont think it emulates a true DB25 cable, either that or the software I am using doesnt like the idea of going through the USB to DB25 cable.

I bought this because many reviews stated that it worked with Windows 7. Having already had enough grief switching over from (believe it or not) Windows 2000, I wanted to make sure whatever I bought should work with 7. The only problem I encountered was that the correct driver for my printer (an OKI 590ML) was not installed with Windows 7 and I had to search Windows update to find it. Once the correct driver was in, I had no problem. Terrific!

Great converter, works well. Included instructions weren't definitive to get it working out of the box.
Had to go to the website and search for instructions.
Found correct selection and has been working great.

I used this to plug in an old parallel port printer to a pc with no parallel port. It did not need the drivers that come with the plug. just plugged the cable in to the pc and installed the legacy drivers for an HP1300 printer and it worked.

This item worked exactly as advertised. It allowed me to hook up an old but still great HP Laserjet printer to a newer computer that has no parallel port.
