These days, you still spend over $1000 bux on a computer, and wham bam, the 9 pin serial port is GONE! GONE I TELL YOU! RS232 Lovers UNITE!! SAVE OUR COM PORTS! <--Builds picket signs, marching on the capitol.

I occasionally take work home with me and need to review programs in embedded systems. This worked flawlessly. The only issue I had, hence a lost star, was the install routine was extremely confusing. I have learned with windows to keep hitting "go" and don't waste time reading. I had to hit a dialog box which had the same message in it 7 times. Had the text changed, I would have felt a lot more comfortable. I thought I was going to be in an endless loop, then it just stopped and was fully installed on my XP system. So if you buy this, just keep hitting OK even if it looks like the program is doing the same thing over and over again. NOTE: for older programs that can only access COM1-4 (pre USB software) you will have to MANUALLY reassign your COM port to the lower numbers. Be sure to remember your reassignments. We can't use the DOS redirect command either :( (Hooray for those who remember the redirect command in DOS!)

Good thing you can still buy an item like this. Old tech is still around and this piece did the trick. Got an old parallel dongle to work straight away. Wonderful!

My company bought some new PCs that didn't have any serial/parallel ports (but we need these for our POS equipment). This product works well (i.e. after you install it you forget it's there because it just works, month after month). I'm writing this review because it's kind of hard to find products like this for USB-only PCs, but this Startech adapter is a winner.
