I was sick of my external slim bluray drives always having issues disconnecting from USB so I opted to make them internal. SATA optical drives require a different power plug than what comes with desktop cases so I got this little gem to do the job. It works like it is suppose to but as other have mentioned it does not lock into place on the optical drive. This is a problem in my situation because my power cables are heavy and pull down on the units, causing them to disconnect. It can be resolved by using tape and some zip ties but ultimately I wish StarTech would make them lockable somehow.

UPDATE: After using this for over 8 months now I have yet to have the connector disconnect from the back of the drive. I'm very pleased with it and increasing my review to 5 stars.

This might work for some, but was a disappointment for me.

Everything plugged in just fine, but then I tried to disconnect my sata cable from it so I could adjust the
layout of the cable path and it broke off the plastic tab leaving the metal pins sticking out. In the trash it went.

I didn't force it..I didn't bend it. I just tried to unplug it. I ended up buying SLSATACDADAP slimline adapter
(also by StarTech) here on amazon and was much happier! That one does require a floppy power cable though (your power supply has at least two) while this one here doesn't.

For those of you that need to use this type, be aware that it is brittle. It also sticks out from the back of your drive a little bit, so make sure have a good 2 inches of clearance.

The startech adapter unit is too wide, given the use this adapter would reasonably be expected for. I'm not sure how a product designer would have missed this issue.

I've used this to adapt a slimline optical drive for a small desktop/server PC.

I've mounted a slimline/laptop bluray drive using a "Slim optical drive + 2x 2.5" HDD" adapter kit into the standard 5.25" PC slot.

The Startech adapter works, but is putting strain on the optical drives sata ports because the sides of the Startech Sata to slimline sata adapter is pushing hard against the side of the adapter kit.

Shaving 1-2mm off the side would probably fix the problem, but the adapter is about 8mm wider (at each side)than is reasonably required.

I can recommend it for non-mounted use.

This adapter works as described. Only problem is that when attached to the back of the Blu-ray drive, the drive will no longer slide completely into the case. Not really the fault of the adapter, but I just wanted to warn others of the possible issue. I ended up ordering a Slimline Sata splitter (one sata out and one power) out).

I have had no problem with it.
Only used it to convert an internal laptop DVD drive into a USB drive.

Got this because it was cheaply available with Prime to quickly solve a problem. But it presented problems of its own. The adapter is much wider than the two cables that feed into it. For my Sony slimline drive, the connectors are right up against the edge of the drive, which meant that for my drive cage in the small case I used it in the adapter is too wide for fitting flush into the connector. I had to bend the cage and angle the adapter a bit which caused the plastic around the SATA connector to break off inside the SATA cable, exposing the bare leads on the adapter. The drive connection still works and I have fixed the cables with ties and electrical tape to ease the strain on the too-big connector. I suppose if my case did not have the drive cage this would not be a problem. Still, I'm disappointed that the plastic broke so easily. Next time I'll spend the extra couple of dollars and order the whole cable adapter style instead.

Nice piece, does the job. Good price. Craftsmanship quality is very decent. I bought this after I mistakenly ordered the wrong one. Make sure that your CD-ROM IS Slimline SATA, not IDE. This adaptor is for SATA only. My mistake was that I bought one before and it was for IDE :(

Works as expected and seems to be well made.
You may need one of these if you are installing a slim optical drive into a desktop computer.
My slim DVD burner did not come with an adapter, so this was required before I could install the drive.

(Additional info: Some small desktop or 'Home Theater PC' cases only have an opening for a slim optical drive to save space).
