This review is from: StarTech.com VGA2HDMIPRO Professional VGA to HDMI Audio Video Converter with Scaler (Electronics)
I had a unique requirement that I wanted to convert just the SPDIF Audio to HDMI and didn't want to have to supply a video signal and it worked great. It also supports 24/96. You do have to hook VGA to configure it and the On Sreen Display will not show without a video input. But once configured it will output HDMI with audio with no video input signal.

This StarTech.com VGA2HDMIPRO Professional VGA to HDMI Audio Video Converter with Scaler is an expensive item but, at least in my and my wife's opinion, it is worth every penny.Last year we drove cross-country and visited relatives and friends. We had lots of home videos we wanted to show them but, as we had no means for playing our videos (stored on our netbook computer) on their televisions, all of us had to crowd around a 10-inch netbook screen. This unit to the rescue! I bought it several months ago and, due to inertia (there is no other word), I did not even try it until we arrived at a relative's house (more than half-way across the country) on our second cross-country driving trip. To make a long story short, hooking it up was as easy as could be (most necessary cables are packed with the unit but you will have to buy separately an AmazonBasics High-Speed HDMI Cable (6.5 Feet/2.0 Meters) - Supports Ethernet, 3D, and Audio Return [Newest Standard] or similar which I had done). Operating it is the proverbial piece of cake. Plug it into an AC outlet, attach the outputs from your computer (VGA and audio) to the inputs of this scaler, and finally attach whatever output(s) from the scaler you will use to your television set (in most cases, that will be only an HDMI cable). Menu options are straightforward and easy to adjust. The picture AND sound are carried over the HDMI cable; most newer televisions will support this (all of the ones with HDMI inputs we tried did) but, if the set accepts only the video via HDMI, you can use a TOSLINK (optical) digital sound output or a standard analog 3.5mm output. The picture and sound quality produced were positively first-rate. Believe me, NO ONE will find any cause for complaint! (Picture and sound were perfectly in sync.) The unit is very small in size and it, and the necessary cables (VGA, Analog Audio, TOSLINK, HDMI) and power supply take up little room in your suitcase. (The power supply comes complete with adapters which would allow use in several foreign countries; we did not take these adapters with us.) In addition to playing our videos via this scaler at our friends' houses, we also used it on the road at hotels which had HDMI capability. As well as our home videos on the computer, we also brought along a Western Digital My Passport Essential SE 1 TB USB 3.0/2.0 Ultra Portable External Hard Drive (Black) onto which I had copied thirty or so feature films so we would have something to watch in our hotel rooms (if what their cable channels offered was of little interest to us). In all cases the scaler worked perfectly. (Some of the hotels in which we stayed [especially those on our way out west] still had older analog televisions; at these hotels, we used this PC To TV Video Converter which, contrary to some reviews, worked perfectly also though, of course, the picture was not anywhere nearly as sharp as it was as when we were able to use this digital scaler on a more modern TV.) As I stated, this unit is expensive. And, within a couple of years, it probably won't even be necessary. I anticipate that late in 2012 or at the latest 2013 almost all computers will offer HDMI outputs. At that point, we will be able to connect our computers to any modern television using just one HDMI cable alone. But of course you'd have to buy one of those new computers at that time. In the mean time, if you have need for playing computer video through an HDMI-equipped television set (or projector) with the computer you already have, this unit certainly fills the bill. I am very happy with my little scaler unit and I highly recommend it to anyone who has need for such a product. Thank you for reading my review and for considering my opinions.

I bought this product after reading multiple product reviews. This one comes with solid construction and a complete operation manual. I use it to connect my laptop to a 42' monitor. The audio and video are just great. No complaints.
