Biography

Huntress was spawned from the preternatural union of Jill Janus and Southern California metal band Professor. They thrive on thundering drums, heavy riffs, spectral solos and catchy choruses that come from the band’s musical concoction of occult science and bong rips.

Huntress released their buzzworthy debut album Spell Eater on April 27, 2012 via Napalm Records. The album, which ... Read more in Amazon's Huntress Store

Editorial Reviews

HUNTRESS released their buzzworthy debut album Spell Eater on April 27, 2012 via Napalm Records. The album, which Metal Hammer calls "a magical debut from the hottest new act of 2012," was just the beginning for the Southern California heavy metal pentad. Huntress recorded their second album Starbound Beast with producer Zeuss (SHADOWS FALL, HATEBREED, AGNOSTIC FRONT) at Hobby Shop Studios in Los Angeles. HUNTRESS vocalist Jill Janus states the band's inspiration for the album came the cosmos. For fans of IRON MAIDEN, GHOST B.C., MERCYFUL FATE, and DORO.

After having heard about this band for a while I was anxious to get this CD. After playing it a few times it is very easy to hear who this band was influenced by. Take one part King Diamond and one part Ann Boleyn/Hellion, and you should have an idea about where this band and singer got their influences.

When it comes to Jill Janus's style, lyrics, and even costumes, Jill is obviously influenced by Ann Boleyn from Hellion, which is a very good thing. However, there are differences. Where Ann Boleyn has a warm midrange growl that often reminds me of Ronnie James Dio, and a certain sense of class, Jill's high end screams are more of an homage to King Diamond.

The musicianship of Huntress is good and heads toward a speed metal style. All in all not bad at all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome! This band is starbound, for sure! July 4, 2013
Format:Audio CD
With their 2nd album, "Starbound Beast", Huntress continues to impress big time!. Starbound Beast is a bit more melodic and a little less brutal than the band`s first album "Spell Eater". And also a little more awesome...which is saying a lot! Starbound Beast is my choice for the album of the year 2013 so far.
In my opinion, Jill Janus is the best female vocalist in metal music today. Period. She deliveres a very cool sound with an impressive range, including clean high screams. She is also the songwriter of the album`s cool & catchy lyrics. And yes, the guitars, bass and drums sound great also.
My favourite songs on the album are Blood Sisters, Destroy Your Life, Starbound Beast and Spectra Spectral. But there are really no "fillers" or bad songs.
In short: this album is awesome!

5.0 out of 5 stars I have become addicted to Huntress July 12, 2013
Format:Audio CD
At first I was not as impressed as I was with the first album. After listening a few more times I have become addicted to it. I have both albums rotating constantly in my phone. I hope this band really makes it and keeps making music. They make the kind of music I really like by having a great combination of melody and brutality in both music and vocals. They are great live as well!

4.0 out of 5 stars Starbound to sieze my destiny! October 17, 2013
Format:Audio CD
A little over a year since the release of their full-length debut, California-based metal band Huntress is back with another offering of high energy, high intensity old school heavy metal. How they managed to do this with as much touring as they've done recently is anybody's guess, but the new album, titled Starbound Beast, sounds anything but rushed.

Starbound Beast picks up right where Spell Eater left off. This is a band that obviously holds the "old guard" in great esteem, and the style of musicianship reflects that. It's tight, melodic, and fierce to the point of thrash at times. And of course the dynamic (and yes, easy on the eyes) Jill Janus tends to steal the show with her piercing and powerful vocals. Aside from the way too cheesy "I Want To..." (and Motorhead's Lemmy seems to be responsible for that one), Huntress manages to capture the old school metal vibe without dealing in clichés. The title track, "Zenith" and "Alpha Tauri" are the standout tracks here, and the bonus cover of Judas Priest's "Running Wild" ends things on just the right note.

If you liked the first Huntress album, you ought to love Starbound Beast. It's just a fantastic straight-up heavy metal album, and one that should appeal to most fans of the old school sound. Fans of bands like Wolf, Enforcer, Holy Grail and Benedictum in particular should check out Huntress. Yes, to some degree they are a "hype" band, but they're one of the hardest working bands around and they back up that hype with pure steel.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed October 25, 2013
By N. Perz
Format:Audio CD
2.5 stars.

When I heard the single "8 of Swords" (from the first album) I was completely blown away. After listening to this album, I am disappointed. The riffs are uninspired and the songwriting is a little weak. The songs don't create an opportunity to showcase Janus's impressive vocal talent. I strongly suspect that the band rushed into the studio after the success of the first album without investing the time to really develop good material. (This seem to be a common problem with bands; sophomore albums are notoriously weak.) "Zenith" is the only song that I would say is good. The rest is just filler.

Not recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars I need to listen to it more July 8, 2013
By Dominic
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
But honest opinions on the first spin I was not as impressed as I was with the 1st album. The production on this is flatter and Jill's vocals sound throatier like she's wrecked them from touring too long on the first wave. I'm going to give it a little more time. I'm just hoping it catches up with me. But right now I'd rather listen to the 1st album by far.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent July 3, 2013
Format:Audio CD
I loved the Huntress demo "Off With Her Head." Spell Eater was a good debut but I think it was plagued a bit by recording issues (I believe they recorded it twice for some reason). This album really surpasses that. It's not as fast as the debut but the songs are better and are given more room to breathe. They have some trippy parts that really mesh well with the album's theame. The production is warmer. Jill sounds fantastic - "Zenith" has some astonishing parts. The band shreds but not to the point of nerdiness (*cough* Holy Grail *cough*). Usually I don't care that MP3 albums doesn't have liner notes, but for this album I really feel like they're missing - I'd love to read the lyrics.

I love the Judas Priest cover of Running Wild...the rest of the album, at least for me, was not heavy enough. I don't hate it I just wish it hit a bit harder.
