Another Billiard book that doesn't disappoint,
By
This review is from: Starcraft: I, Mengsk (Mass Market Paperback)
I continue to be amazed at the quality of the Starcraft/Warcraft novel adaptations even after all of these years.
Most of the story is quick and very energetic a new story isn't really told but some important background information is filled in and various new secondary characters are introduced. Of these characters I am most impressed with Angus Mengsk father of Arcturus and grandfather of Valerian. However as with all "lets find in the background" books there are several problems that I have with the story specifically in the rather convenient way that Arcturus shifts gears from confederation marine to prospector to revolutionary. All Starcraft fans know that those shifts had to be made for the sake of the overall storyline but you have to suspend your disbelief for much of it. Overall-Solid, does what it sets out to do.

I love to learn about Starcraft lore..and by far out of the books I read this one is the best and a good place to start in the series. First of all, it's all about why Arcturus Mengst is the way he is and his history and such. It's VERY well written, beautifully even. With a style that kept me hooked enough to sit there for 4 hours straight reading until it was done. If you can't appreciate great imagery and complex character development then stick to a manga or something.

I played the game and now have read all the books. They are truly a great series and I was suprisingly refreshed since I don't normally read books like this. Now I am replaying the Starcraft 2 campaign with new insight to the "world around me" :-)

Great addition to the SC world,
This review is from: Starcraft: I, Mengsk (Mass Market Paperback)
I loved this book for the fact that it explained/answered literally every question I had about Mengsk. The story kept me drawn in and I had problems putting this book down. The storyline was great, and the author nailed the character of Mengsk. I loved this book, and would recommend it to anyone who has read early SC books. Or if you played the new SC2: Wings of Liberty, and are wanting an incite into why Mengsk is so hated lol.

I, Mengsk is a wonderful overview of the life of Arcturus Mengsk outside of what has already been written about him (See Starcraft Archive), starting from his senior year of high school.
The book contains a variety of stories which show the reader how and why Mengsk became the man who would be Emperor. Also included are references to (his son) Valerian's upbringing by his mother, Juliana Pasteur, and training he received from Master Miyamoto, the same man who trained Arcturus Mengsk in the martial arts. The really eerie thing about the book is how relevant it is to current events in the real world, but, as they say, truth is stranger than fiction.

Admittedly I had purchased this book on a whim, but soon became smitten with it. It is without a doubt either the best or second best book in the Starcraft line. (Possibly only second to Speed of Darkness) I found it quite enjoyable as to how readable it was, anyone could literally read this book and not feel lost within the Starcraft universe. So imagine how much sense it made to me.
It introduced a lot of strong secondary characters that allow you to understand the background of the now Emporer Mengsk. Allong with the characters come intrigueing back story as well engaging bits of action to make sure the mix never reaches a point of stagnation. An excellent read that without a doubt in my mind any individual could enjoy given the chance.

At the very least, it tells the fascinating story of a pivotal character in the Starcraft storyline. Finally, we get some light shed on Arcturus Mengsk's past--best of all, on his entire life and experiences. We learn about his son, his father, and the entire context which shaped him in what he has become.
It definetely isn't the most entertaning SC book I've read, but I enjoyed every chapter, but most importantly, I enjoyed the characters and plots. It felt like Star Wars Epidoses I-III, without the bad, and yet we witness the evolution and growth of our Arcturus and the ones around him, and how this manifests in SC universe. Interesting characters and development, good flow, ackward ending--but a good book in general. Highly recommended for any SC lore fan!
