"Connie Shelton gets better with every book she writes." -- The Midwest Book Review

It’s a terrible case of mistaken identity when a gang of bank robbers think that Charlie is a famous movie star. Disappointed with their take from the bank, they decide that a hefty ransom will be their ticket to riches. But what will happen when the real star steps forward? Charlie knows that only her wits will save her from this band of desperate men.

Meanwhile, in a race against the clock, Charlie's husband Drake is working with the FBI and local authorities to get Charlie back before her captors realize their mistake.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

With Stardom Can Be Murder I had a hard time knowing how I would approach this plot. In the beginning, agents were advising me to go "bigger" (as in, more dangerous, grittier) with my storylines. I wrote the first four chapters and set it aside. Ultimately, by the time it was written, I had changed publishers and was given a little more control over the outcome so I completely rewrote those original chapters. Although it seemed tempting to throw every possible bad outcome at Charlie and Drake, I know that my readers prefer Charlie's softer, more humorous side. Ultimately, she ends up dealing with the bad guys with her usual 'attitude.' I hope you like the result!

1.0 out of 5 stars My favorite character was killed off!!! February 18, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
That's it, I'm done with the "Charlie" series. A few books ago her beloved dog and best friend Rusty was savagely beaten on the head. He recovered, thankfully. The next book her clients beloved cat was murdered. Now in this book Rusty is dead. Rusty was my favorite character in the book! He was so vital and personable. Now the author did away with him, presumably so she can concentrate more on the husband, Drake. Don't like Drake, never have, and him being more front=center in the books does not make me like the book any better. My other complaint is her neighbor, Elsa, who I have halfway been expecting to see die. In almost every book, Charlie laments that she needs/wants to start spending more time with Elsa, but she never does.
As soon as I read that Rusty is now dead, I'm not even going to finish reading this book. I'm done and finished with this series that seems to use animal abuse and now death so casually. Shameful.

4.0 out of 5 stars I May Have Some Catching Up To Do July 23, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I'd been on a losing streak, trying out kindle books and wondering where all the good ones had gone, when I stumbled upon an Amazon free read I'd downloaded called Stardom Can Be Murder: Charlie Parker Mystery #12.

Finally, a book I could get into! I absolutely loved the heroine. From the start, the author put me right into the action. I had to keep reading to learn how plucky Charlie would solve her dilemma.

I loved the author's voice, and her deft characterizations of not only Charlie, her husband, and the secondary characters, but also the villains. Yes, I felt the tension, but knew in my heart that somehow the heroine would prevail. Also, it was great fun reading about the foibles of the villains.

Another reviewer mentioned reading the preceding Charlie Parker mysteries in order before reading this one. I must admit this was my first Charlie Parker mystery experience, but I had no trouble bonding with the character and understanding what was going on.

That said, judging from the outstanding quality of #12 in the series, I may have some catching up to do!

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it but...........(minor spoiler within) April 30, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I'm a big fan of this series. Obviously, since I just finished book 12. I love the characters, especially Charlie. I also like the way Ms Shelton has developed Charlie's character throughout the years. I get very wrapped up in these stories, to the point that, when I realized Rusty was gone, I actually had tears in my eyes. He was such an important part of Charlie's life, I felt for her. Felt that emptiness she talked about. I was very happy to see Freckles come along to fill that emptiness. This is a good story. Very different from the usual Charlie sleuthing adventures. The "but" in the title refers to an editing problem I came accross. Now, the following is a minor spoiler, so stop reading if you don't want to find out about a very minor error, but big enough for me to notice. First, when String steals the SUV from the motel parking lot, he has to hot wire the car. After that, every time the car stops, and even when Charlie escapes, KEYS to the car are mentioned. Where did the keys come from? So we mysteriously go from having to hot wire the car to having keys readily available. Also, the kidnappers had no idea who they had. Up until charlie's escape, they thought they had a famous TV/movie celebrity. Then, again mysteriously, the kidnappers manage to find out who Charlie is, where she works, and where she lives. She asks herself how this happened, but she has no answers and neither does the author. So the story ends and we never find out how or where the kidnappers got their information.
So, although I found these two mistakes just a bit annoying, since I expect better from Ms Shelton, I still thoroughly enjoyed the book and look forward to the next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read as usual. October 2, 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is the first time I have written a review. I was very glad to have found Connie Shelton and the Charlie Parker series. After reading the first book "Gossip Can Be Murder", I was hooked. Since then every book in this series has had me hooked and waiting for the next book. The 12th book in this series "Stardom Can Be Murder" was a bit different, but well worth the read. It had me from the first chapter. I could not wait to see how Charlie got out of her trouble. It will keep you guessing until the end. Now I can't wait to see what Connie Shelton will put up next.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stardom Can Be Murder April 30, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
This book seemed to read a bit faster and the story lost intensity towards the end - but during the thick of things it felt like I was right there with Charlie! Great detail and visuals, believable characters and actions. It was wonderful to visit with Charlie and Drake again, just wish it had lasted a bit longer.

Just finished reading "Stardom can be Murder"! I loved it, I felt as though I was going through what Charlie was going through. Charlies and Drakes chemistry still shines!! I felt so bad for him a few times as he was worrying about Charlie. Not only was this a great mystery that keeps you on your toes, it's also a bit funny. Charlies "thoughts" are hilarious sometimes! Can't wait for the next one!!!

I think this is the best book of the series so far. It starts out with suspense and doesn't let up until the end. Connie Shelton really outdid herself this time.

More About the Author

...Every 5 minutes, 24 hours a day, somewhere in the world, someone downloads a Connie Shelton mystery...

A personal Thank You to all my readers who make this little statistic possible. Having fun with my writing, and connecting with readers--that's what being a mystery writer means to me. And I LOVE what I do!

It began in 1985 when I started writing my first novel, without much clue how to go about it. Two years and 500 pages later, when I finally typed 'The End,' I felt a huge rush of excitement. That book took third place in the Southwest Writers competition and began making the rounds of publishers. I simply started writing my second, and then my third books.

After publishing ten of my Charlie Parker mysteries, I decided to branch out with a second series and I created the character of Samantha Sweet. One of the ways in which I earned a little extra pocket money during my high school years was to bake and decorate cakes--hence, a career for Samantha based on my own experiences.

In 2009 I switched publishers and was off on a new adventure, seeing all of my books made available for Kindle and the other ebook devices that were just beginning to take off in the book world. It's been an exciting time in publishing and I'm loving the new formats and the ability to personally connect with readers all over the world via my newsletter and my website at
