Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6 Up?An entertaining collection of 13 stories with an intriguing diversity of themes, subjects, and styles that provides an excellent introduction to the science-fiction genre. Martha Soukup, Will Shetterly, Jane Yolen, and Sherwood Smith are among the contributors. References to classic stories and characters, from Icarus to Winnie the Pooh to Sendak's Max, add charm and meaning to some selections, while others gain depth from their thoughtful consideration of contemporary social issues such as violence, poverty, and sexual discrimination. Imaginative plots, well-realized characters, and distinctive settings appear throughout, and the consistently high-quality writing helps to create a sense of cohesion despite the authors' differing styles and subjects. Some stories use inventive slang or off-world settings to create a decidedly futuristic feel; others take place in the present and feature "average" individuals caught up in unusual events. Challenging concepts, sophisticated vocabulary, and the strong focus on the eternally engrossing quest for self knowledge make these selections most accessible and interesting to older readers, but it's likely that some sixth and seventh graders will enjoy them as well. Libraries large and small will want to add this thought-provoking volume to their collections and keep a close watch for other works by these talented authors.?Lisa Dennis, The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh

From Booklist

Gr. 8^-12. In a companion to A Wizard's Dozen (1993), Stearns presents 13 provocative new sf stories that will entice readers to explore "new directions of every sort." The authors whose works are collected here have stretched the boundaries of reality to create frequently funny, but often unsettling tales in which teenage characters are pushed to the limits of self-discovery. The entire collection is excellent: among the best are Yolen's "Wilding," about a group of teens tempting fate by "morphing" without safety devices, and Shetterley's "Secret Identity," in which a superpowered hero learns to be true to himself. Chris Sherman
