I pretty much bought this book for, well, the blatant starfinder because it is much bigger and prettier than the tool I own and I thought it would be handy for teaching the astronomy merit badge to those little Boy Scouts. Anyway, the starfinder tool is extremely cool (and big!), but the book that comes with it is definitely a keeper, for it takes "beginners" through the basic essentials of stargazing via the necessary equipment, procedures, and a thorough look at our solar system and the many things in it. There are also some AMAZING photos from various satelittes and telescopes. Loved it!

This book blew me away the first time I saw it. Smack dab on the cover, a very nice-looking planisphere. Two things, you will never lose it since it's nicely wedged on the cover, and it will never get ruined as it's plastic. It's very professionally done.

Onto the book itself, it does a very nice job covering the basics of astronomy. First, it introduces you to the world of star gazing. What is in the Solar System? How does the sky change every week? Pretty much, you'll know the basics on how to prepare for your first star gazing night. Very useful and very nice.

Next part, you get the facts on each planet in our region, alongside comets, meteors, and asteroids. What is awesome is that the book lets you know what the planets look like in the sky and how to look for them with the naked eye or binoculars. Nicely detailed pictures accompany each entry and overall a very enjoyable read.

Third part of the book covers all 88 constellations. What are they? What important stars make up them? How to look for them? Detailed maps and pictures dominate this section. Great all around.

Finally, the last section is the monthy sky guide. It covers each month of important events in the sky (ex, Meteor showers, when planets are at their brightest, transits, eclipses, etc...). A wonderful end to a wonderful book. Even for full price, you truly get what you paid for.

I got a cheap used version of this and read the entire book. It really helped me get some basic background information but you will need to look for more advanced books if you get serious about this hobby.

The Starfinder makes it easier to find stars in the nighttime sky. Used in conjunction with the Stars and Planets handbook makes stargazing much easier.
