More About the Author

Here's a little bit about me, personally and professionally: I was born in New Haven, CT into an academic family and moved with my family to Seattle, Washington when I was 6 months old. I moved again to Claremont, CA when I was 6 years old, and again to Arlington, Texas when I was 10. I then attended college and graduate school in Massachusetts and crossed the country by car several more times during my 20's and 30's. Hence, I've seen almost all of the 50 states plus Canada. I love mountain climbing and have a high degree of wanderlust and a thirst for adventure, so I spent a great deal of my "youth" exploring new places and sleeping in tents while others my age were busy settling down, starting a family and getting serious about life. For many reasons, my life path has been far more circuitous, taking me to Europe and South America as well as to a small cabin in the woods of New Hampshire, where I lived for a while without running water, flushing toilets, telephone or electricity, in the middle of winter. Henry David Thoreau's life at Walden Pond always held a certain allure for me, so I checked it out myself. It was a great way to get quiet and see what I really thought about life and living.

These days, I live a more settled lifestyle with my husband, my flower gardens and our two Australian Shepherd mixed-breed dogs, in Durham, NC. It is here that I have built my executive coaching practice, working with local executives on refining their leadership styles to be more in sync with their personality styles. I'm a firm believer in life balance so I make every effort to spend relatively equal amounts of time playing and working, knowing that I've still got a long way to go before I'm ready to retire and take the slow road through life. It's all about pacing, in my mind, so I try not to rush anywhere.

I write because I love to, and not for any other reason. If my books are helpful to you, that fact is an added bonus, which makes me very happy, but it's not a primary driver. I've been writing since I was little and it's always been a great way for me to indulge and encourage my creative side. Now that I'm not running around the country in search of large mountains to climb and interesting people to meet, I like to climb metaphorical mountains in my mind. Of course, I'll never stop wanting to meet interesting people. That part of me will never change.

My favorite author, currently, is Martha Beck. I love her intellect, honesty and wit. I'd love to hear who your favorite authors are.

Format: Paperback
Beyond the stories, this stirring little book offers expansive insights as well as personal navigation tools for re-growing ourselves after soul-searing damage. In her introduction, Rebecca Merrill pens this passage, one of my favorites:

"Through pain and healing we can deepen our compassion, empathy and willingness to serve and to help others. We can also put ourselves back together again, after we've been broken by life, into a new pattern that shines with a more complex and beautiful artistry. Like glass that has been broken into a thousand pieces and transformed into a beautiful stained glass window, we, too, can be magnificently changed by life, with new facets that reflect love and light in more luminescent ways. If we will allow the process to happen, we can be regenerated into far more complex, beautiful human beings through the process of being broken and made whole again."

Merrill is talking about real transformation here. She calls it alchemy, this transfiguration of deep personal damage into a radiant, generative pattern of individual life expression. Shattered stars, some laboring under fear, shame or remorse, take responsibility for their lives and turn into shimmering stars. They become "strong in the broken places and at peace in the midst of their human frailties." And their ripple effects in the world "go on and on like a legacy of love that gets passed down through generations."

Starfish Leaders reminds us that everyone struggles, and that even the best among us sometimes fail and fall apart. More than this, it showcases a few of the infinite ways of remaking ourselves into something better--even when the only ground from which to rebuild is the ash we've burnt down to.

In this very unique and moving book, Rebecca Merrill weaves the personal and political into a powerful statement about congruency and integrity. Through the inner and outer stories of a cast of characters, she affirms that real leaders are able to transform the most painful, challenging moments of their lives into visionary leadership that impacts and uplifts others.

The first chapter which includes Rebecca's own story is the most riveting in Starfish Leaders and pulls you straight into a reading experience that you will relish.

I only wish some of the chapters were longer--Merrill spends more time with some characters than others and I kept hoping she would come back to those on whom she spends less time.

If you've been through a difficult experience recently or are facing some formidable obstacles in your life, this hopeful and fresh book will give you courage and direction for your journey. If you're happy as a lark, you'll still benefit from understanding how brokenness and regeneration can transform our methods and motivation for leading.

Rebecca Merrill brings straightforward reminders on the power of self care and it's direct correlation to our capacity to lead well. The stories and imagery makes "Starfish Leaders" a personal, warm, and engaging read. This is an ideal gift for the people in your life you care about - and who are stressed out by work and work/life balance.

The five points of regeneration/alchemy that Merrill points to are classic components of wellness. The argument being that to be fully present and fully capable for our work, we must first remember ourselves and our own well being. Authentic leadership means showing up as you are; and to be most effective, we must wake up to our real life challenges, confront them in ourselves, and find a pathway through. Our personal growth effects the quality of our professional success.

This is an important read at an important time. We cannot afford to continue losing ourselves at the expense of our work. Navigating our leadership challenges successfully can be directly impacted by the concepts in "Starfish Leaders."
