I bought this model in black and it is the best design. I've had two others previous to this design, one that you pumped and one that had the knob on top that you had to wind up in a circle, no comparison to using this one. I was hesitant to purchase this because it was more money than most and it was larger, I was looking for one that compacted to take less space in the cabinet but I'm glad I chose this model. It takes the water off the salad greens with no effort at all. It is easy to wind up and only takes a few turns of the handle to get it moving in full motion. It is easy enough for my two year to use. Definitely a must have in the kitchen.

Starfrit Salad Spinner, Purple

The Bad:
When we got this product, after a couple of of meals, we noticed a metal washer in the lettuce. We weren't sure where it came from. When we put back on the top and continued spinning, we noticed another plastic washer in the lettuce. We could hear rattling noises in the top, which verified something was wrong with the product. This is a SAFETY issue!

The Ugly:
We called the manufacturer, and could only leave a voice message. I explained the problem, emphasized that this was a SAFETY issue, and left my phone number for a call back, per their instructions. NO ONE CALLED US BACK.

The Good:
We buy from Amazon whenever we can. Like Costco, we trust their return policy, etc. This spinner is by far the best one we have had with respect to getting out water from lettuce, etc., so we opted to get a replacement. Amazon sent us our replacement immediately. We still look at our lettuce, but also at the center of the inside of the top, where we can see the washers that fell out of the previous unit.

Just got my first salad spinner; read the reviews and decided on this one. We have been eating lots of salad and I was tired of drying my lettuce by whipping it in a towel around my head (great visual, huh?) Anyway, it seems very sturdy, the bowl is attractive enough to serve salad in it. You can rinse the lettuce in the colander portion, spin it dry in less than a minute and be ready to go for eating. It also stores good in my fridge; fits perfect on the shelf. I am happy!

I can't say enough good things about this salad spinner. The design is just brilliant. It's easy to get the inner bowl moving fast, and also to get it to stop. The side handle is really comfortable and durable compared to other designs that use cords or other gadgets. It doesn't "slip" like some of the less expensive models. It's just a great way to get leafy vegetables dry!

We have had the black version of this spinner for quite some time. It has been a real quality product that gets endless use. So when our daughter's old-style spinner quit, I went looking for another one of these. The black version was no longer available, so I bought her the purple one. Still, all the same comments from my previous purchase hold true. Here's the original review I put up quite some time ago on the 1st one of these I purchased...

Our old spinner is the circular crank on the top of the salad spinner lid. It still works well, but is a style that you don't seem to find anymore. We grow a lot of greens in the summer and really go through the salad. So we usually have a couple of spinners going at any one time. Unfortunately, we've had to make do the last few years with one of those Kitchen Aid models with the pump you push down hard to get spinning. From the get-go I knew that was a crummy design as the pressure you were applying was going directly to the bottom of the salad basket. Plus the pump tube running through the entirety of the salad basket used up way too much room in the basket, making for significantly reduced volume of salad. A **really** dumb design. And of course it ultimately failed just as described above--the application of downward pressure on the pump mechanism ultimately broke the bottom of the salad basket--DUH!! Thus rendering the Kitchen Aid into trash. So we shopped around and saw a number of other models with the dreaded pump mechanism--and costly, too. Then we found this unit on Amazon and ordered one. This is an excellent item. Holds a good quantity of salad, spins easily with a more natural cranking motion than the top-crank models (or those dumb cord-pull versions), and really gets the water out of the greens. Very economically priced as well. We use this thing a TON, and it is really holding up to our punishing use. If we need another spinner at some point, this will be the one. Stoked to have found this thing.

First time using a salad spinner and when ordering, relied on comments. It meets my expectations as did not expect it to completely dry the fresh greens from the garden. It seems to work better if you do not overfill the bowl.

I love this salad spinner. I had one of the kind where you pull the string & it broke. I've also used the push button kind. This one is way better than those other styles. It's very sturdy, it spins fast & smooth and gets my greens dry. It's also easy to clean and not too bulky in the cupboard. So far I've used it for lettuce, kale and basil & it worked equally well with all of them.

I am being picky here: despite this being the best salad spinner on the market imo, I just wish a salad spinner could get all the water off. That aside, the Starfrit Salad Spinner is sturdy yet not overly bulky, easy to clean out, visually pleasing, has a brake that I will add works great, a cranking handle that feels the way a handle should - sturdy and strong - and, finally, it is not outrageously priced. An excellent buy. Please though, could someone make a salad spinner that gets all the water off? Hopefully Starfrit will do it first because I love the construction, durability, aesthetics and usability of their product.

Edit: 20120612
I recently tried one of those push down salad spinner (literally you just push the center button down in order to spin dry salad etc) and I have to say that I prefer that type now. Yeah, I have heard that they don't have as good of reliability, but I am not too concerned with that. Also, the quality/feel of that push down button is not nearly up to par with this Starfrit but the convenience of it is superior.
