This toy looking gadget peels the apples incredibly fast. The down side to this is that I am making more apple pies then ever before and my husband says he is getting fat. I decided on this one because of the reviews and the price, and I'm really glad I took a chance on it. The peeler comes with three blades so it should last a good long while. When it is done peeling, there is only a tiny bit of skin left near the very top and bottom. As you can see from the product picture the skin that comes off is wider than the ones done from typical peelers. I prefer the wider skin because they are tastier to eat and they are great for use in candied apple peels.
The down side to this product is that the peeler looks like a child's toy and the core slicer that comes with it is on the cheap side and doesn't work well. I prefer to cut up the apple with a knife anyway, because I prefer large chunks of apples in my pies.
The handle of the unit comes off so that the peeler stores in a smaller box. Don't forget to save the plastic caps that sit on the spikes and on the blades for safer storage. Have fun baking and feel free to leave a recipe in the comments section so I have an excuse to peel more apples, my kids fight over who gets to turn the handle so I'm always looking for another use for peeled apples.
Edited to add: I uploaded a video of my oldest using the peeler, it's actually easier than he made it look - I think he was nervous being on camera. As you can see my middle guy is just insane - but in a good way.
The cons: It looks like it belongs in a toy chest, so if you pride yourself on your beautiful Martha Stewart kitchen you're going to want to put this away after using it rather than leave it displayed. It doesn't work well at all on potatoes--even when you cut them in half first, it still misses lots of spots and carves them into apple shapes. There are four plastic suction cups on its base to keep it from moving while you're using it, and you have to wet them to make them work. It only takes a few drops of water, though, and then they work fine.
I love mine and use it all the time. For me, the cons are outweighed by the usefulness of being able to peel, core, and slice an apple in seven seconds. I'll never go back to a sideways peeler.
I chose it because I thought that it would help my 8 yr old son enjoy helping with the apple harvest and processing ordeal we go through every year. I thought he would like to watch the gears move. Well he loved it. We all loved it. I even purchased a second unit for my Mom.
The bonus core ejector not only works as an apple corer, it is a great apple gun (similar to a potato gun, just for much older kids). The bonus slicer is also handy, how ever the slices could be smaller.
I highly recommended this product.
Pros: The peeler stays in place very well with the suction cups. It does peel the apples very fast and it peels all sizes which is great. The handle is easy to grip and the blade moves quickly over the apple. The blade is very sharp, I was able to peel boxes of apples in one day using the same blade. It does however come with a bonus blade. Also it has safety covers for the blade and apple holder, great bonus because it is very sharp!
Cons: To start off the handle falls off easily, not to big of a deal it hooks right back on. Also if the apples have bruises, it tends to get snagged on them. For the most part, I loved the apple peeler until it came time to clean it. I followed the directions exactly, but the device itself isn't sealed along the edges and the juices form the apples get inside it. I tried running it under water to get it clean, but no luck. My sister also bought one and I asked her and she had the same problem and she ended up throwing it away. It's to bad, because this is a great peeler.
