5.0 out of 5 stars great machine
My son & I prepare 250 pounds of Gravenstein apples for applesauce each year. We couldn't do it without this machine. We know that it was created for home use, not commercial use, so it probably wasn't intended for such intense use. Therefore, we run it for 15 minutes then let it cool for 15 minutes so the motor doesn't overheat. We just finished this year's batch,...

The Rotato Express, when it works, makes peeling potatoes and other veggies a breeze. It's especially great when making large batches of potatoes or turnips -- all that peeling can really be a hassle sometimes. The Rotato can turn a big job into a fast job and save you a lot of time in the kitchen. When it works.

The problem is, well, it doesn't always work. The build quality of this thing is cheaper than cheap. The blades pop loose easily because the plastic clips they're attached to are flimsy. Veggies with hard peels will constantly jerk the blades out. Even worse, the spring on the arm of my device popped loose after about two months of medium use. This renders the device useless unless you can manage to reinsert the spring (not an easy job).

At the cheap price, you could almost consider it a disposable item and just grab a new Rotato, but that's just too darn wasteful for such a big hunk of plastic.

If they delivered a better unit, even for $10-15 bucks more, I could heartily recommend this device for people who enjoy potatoes, turnips, or any other veggies that need a lot of peeling. As it is, it might be worth a look, but convenience comes with headaches.

1.0 out of 5 stars Cheaply made version of the original peeler, November 30, 2008

I bought the Rotato to replace my old electric peeler that finally died. I needed to peel a large stack of potatoes for Thanksgiving, and thought I had it made when I remembered the Rotato sitting in the pantry, unused since receiving it earlier this year. What I pulled out of the box was a lightweight plastic ghost of the old peeler. The blade could not grab hold of the potato skin, just skipped along making nicks until it reached the bottom and turned itself off. I tried it on dry and wet potatoes. I'm envious of those reviewers who had good luck with their peelers; I could not get mine to work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love to peel potatoes!, December 26, 2010
This review is from: Starfrit 93209 Rotato Express - Electric Peeler (Kitchen)
My sister is wheelchair bound as well as having severe arthritis, yet she cooks and maneuvers her way around a kitchen in ways you have never imagined! Living 500 miles away from her, I only get home once a year, but every time I do, I am amazed all over again. She loves to cook, however, peeling for any extended period of time is arduous at best for Sis. (But her potato salad would be worth the wait, should she have to hand peel all those potatoes.) One day on the phone, she told me her old machine died and she did not know what she was going to do! The family barbecue was on for the weekend, and she wanted to contribute her marvelous potato salad. Amazon to the rescue. While still on the phone with her, I was able to verify the potato peeler she desired. Within days, she called me to say she was back in her wheelchair at the end of the dining room table: Peeling away! Soon the smell of cooking potatoes would be filling the house, and she would not be trying to open a pill bottle while in pain! Even without a disability, who really LIKES to peel potatoes? Get one of these gadgets and you, too, will look forward to KP!

This was a Thanksgiving Day gift for my 88 year old mother and she loved it! After I showed her how to it worked, she used it and it perfectly for her. We peeled a 5 lb. bag of potatoes in 10 minutes and it was fun! It ended up being the hit of the day!

I ordered this peeler thinking it was a curley fry maker. Of course I was dissapointed when it arrived and I found out all it did was peel stuff.
I agree w/ another reviewer who said it was cheaply made however this thing rocks when it comes to peeling potatoes, apples etc. I am so happy I accidently ordered it. I saw today where I could order new blades. While it doesnt seems to need them yet I'm going to keep a few on hand. Also, you can pop a few "c" batteries in it and take it camping w/ you.

2.0 out of 5 stars Broken blades, February 21, 2008
This review is from: Starfrit 93209 Rotato Express - Electric Peeler (Kitchen)
This item arrived with 2 broken blades. The packaging appeared fine, the blades just looked cheaply made. Blades got clogged super easy when peeling any kind of fruit or vegetable I tried. Only a small amount of the item would peel meaning I would have to restart it over and over again. I returned the peeler after one day, would not recommend it.

I had always wanted to try an electric apple peeler, since I love making apple pies, but had low expectations. I have now used this machine several times per week since I bought it and absolutely LOVE it - I highly recommend it for anyone who cooks with apples or just loves eating peeled apples.

2.0 out of 5 stars Less than stellar, June 13, 2010

Sorry folks, this one just doesn't measure up. It takes about as much time to set it up for peeling an apple, or potato as it does to manually peel same. I have yet been able to make it peel a potato. It peels about 3/4ths of an apple but nil on a potato. I expected more.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not a Daisy, November 17, 2008
This review is from: Starfrit 93209 Rotato Express - Electric Peeler (Kitchen)
If you are thinking that buying this will make up for that Daisy Potato peeler you had back in the day, don't bother to buy this. It's cheap plastic. Works better on larger fruit and potatoes... not a very sturdy peeler.

Not worth the money...
Sorry!
