3.0 out of 5 stars Not terrible, just plain boring., March 21, 2011

This review is from: Stargate Atlantis: Dead End: SGA-12 (Mass Market Paperback)
Although I've certainly read worse books, this one disappointed me. The story line sounded interesting at first, but several scenes were very long and drawn out. I found myself actually skimming whole pages - and not missing a thing. I normally never do this. The technical aspect of figuring out how to get the team back to Atlantis was fairly interesting and accurate. When I saw Sheppard, Rodney, or Zalenka's name mentioned, I stopped to read thoroughly. The scenes with Ronan or Teyla, two characters whom I really like, were painfully long and boring. Ronan's hunting scene, which could have been described in four or five pages, took about fifteen pages all together. Teyla basically did nothing but walk around asking questions, and she is normally a very active person. Also, some of the language patterns just didn't seem right. The word "reckon" was used a lot. Maybe Sheppard would have used the term occasionally, but I can't ever remember Ronan saying it, and definitely not McKay. Sheppard's speech sounded more like Cameron Mitchell actually. The team members and their equipment were often referred to as Tauri and that term is usually reserved for off world missions in the Milky Way galaxy. Also, even though Rodney can be arrogant and rude, he was awful in this book. I normally love his character, but he came across as the world's biggest jerk with no redeeming qualities at all. The author obviously knows quite a bit about the show, but some things were just off. I could have overlooked these small things if there was any action. Unfortunately, there was not. The team members were mostly separted and I missed the team dynamic. All in all, the book was not terrible and didn't have a lot of inaccuracies, but it was just plain boring. I am a fast reader and this one seemed to take me forever; even with the skimming.

3.0 out of 5 stars not bad, January 17, 2012

I've read better, but at least the characters were true. Better than being "bookless". The setting and plot were different and the hunting scene was good.

This is a very solid and well written book aside from a few minor complaints in how the people of the Stargate program are referred to. Once you look past that, and it is minor as not said too much, the book reads like a good episode and has everyone involved from the main team on another planet trying to find their way home to Weir and Zelenka trying to figure out how to get them home. A very good book and must have for all Atlantis readers.
