More About the Author

Martha Wells is the author of eleven fantasy novels, including Wheel of the Infinite, City of Bones, The Element of Fire, and the Nebula-nominated The Death of the Necromancer. Her most recent fantasy novels are The Cloud Roads and The Serpent Sea, to be published by Night Shade Books in 2011 and 2012. She has also written a fantasy trilogy: The Wizard Hunters, The Ships of Air, and The Gate of Gods, all currently out in paperback from HarperCollins Eos. She has had short stories in the magazines Black Gate, Realms of Fantasy, Lone Star Stories, and Stargate Magazine, and in the Tsunami Relief anthology Elemental and The Year's Best Fantasy #7. She has essays in the nonfiction anthologies Farscape Forever and Mapping the World of Harry Potter from BenBella Books. This is an excellent addition to the series of original Stargate:Atlantis novels. Martha Wells provides a story full of excitement and drama, bringing the characters to life so that you can almost hear the actors' voices as you read. Fans of Rodney McKay should particularly enjoy this novel, although the other characters shine in this story, too. The plot is intriguingly complex and the denouement is satisfying both emotionally and intellectually.

It's very rare that a tie-in novel is as good as the show is, much less surpasses it, but this definitely does it. Fantastic characterization, a solid, interesting plot that works *with* the characters, and wonderfully written. I cannot recommend this enough to anyone who is a fan of Stargate at all.

I read this in one sitting! Needless to say, it moves along like gangbusters. The story makes good use of the "Quantum Mirror" concept established in an earlier SG-1 episode, with the team encountering a lost scientist from another reality and ending up traveling to her universe. I also liked the way the story was planted at a specific point in the show's continuity, right after Ford was lost and Ronon was just getting started fitting into the team. The author did a good job of capturing the "voices" of the various characters, even the minor supporting players like Major Lorne. I will definitely be looking for more novels by Martha Wells.
