5.0 out of 5 stars Breaking The Black Metal Chains...........
Mortiis, as most black metal fans realize, once played bass with Emperor, and was also the chief songwriter of their earlier releases. Yet, for Mortiis, this was simply a temporary stop on his way to valleys much darker and forboding. Mortiis' music is not black metal, not metal at all. Some call it dark wave or dark ambient, he calls it "dark dungeon music"...

2.0 out of 5 stars NOTHING DARK ABOUT IT.
I read a five star review from another customer that said this was a great gothic/dark ambient CD and went against my better judgement (The silly bat/troll thing?) and bought it. I'm a huge fan of dark ambient and I'm always looking for new music, but was disappointed after listening to this CD. This is more like lame medieval new age music, for lack of a better term. If...

5.0 out of 5 stars Breaking The Black Metal Chains..........., October 15, 2000
Mortiis, as most black metal fans realize, once played bass with Emperor, and was also the chief songwriter of their earlier releases. Yet, for Mortiis, this was simply a temporary stop on his way to valleys much darker and forboding. Mortiis' music is not black metal, not metal at all. Some call it dark wave or dark ambient, he calls it "dark dungeon music". This discription is appropriate. Each release is primarily instrumental, with the occasional haunting vocals or wails of anguish. Sarah Jezebel provided the vocals on this release. Listening, you are sent on a journey to the stars, on viking ships and other regions....a very haunting and very beautiful release. This import is coupled with a leather bound book, filled with imformation and prose. A must have addition to any collection. Ave, Mortiis.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, September 27, 2000

Even friends of mine who are less "eclectic" and more conservative in their music taste found this to be excellent listening. I'm a new convert to the "ambient Gothic" sound - and highly recommend Stargate to anyone who wants to try something different.

5.0 out of 5 stars A journey to a Land far away., October 13, 2000
This review is from: Stargate (Audio CD)
Come traveller and sit by the fire and make us, old fools with timeless tales, company. You ought to be tired from your long journey through the misty mountains, don't you? You should be, my friend! Now rest and gain forces, for tomorrow will be a hard day. But never sleep unarmed! You never know what beast might crawl out of the dark forest and attack you.

This is just one small piece of what the real essence behind Mortiis is. This album, is simply fantastic, not only will you be entranced by the atmosphere it creates, but you will make your imagination fly. And if you are already an imaginative individual, (such as myself) your imagination won't fly, but your whole essence will be transported there.

Truly an epic.

Good concept album about elves, dragons, trolls, the end of the world...the age of fire....the cloak and dagger, etc., . It's fun, it's dark, and it's weird. And now it's remastered. Mortiis's The Stargate is essential Mortiis.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ambient metal, August 18, 2000

Mortiis develops an aspect of dark music rarely found in other ambient bands. The mix of keyboards with dark sound effects makes Stargate a unique piece of fine art, very pleasant to listen.

If your looking for some really good dark ambient music, check these artists out instead. (Atrium Carceri, Sophia or even In Slaughter Natives.) HAPPY HUNTING.
