5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Team story
I received an advance copy of the book, Stargate SG1: The Barque of Heaven and just recently finished reading it. I am very pleased to say that this story hearkens back to the good old team adventure days. There's something for everyone to do, some really nice team and character moments, with a bit more emphasis on Daniel & Jack. This book reminds me WHY SG1 is the team...

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting 1001 planets
It reminds me of some Arabic tales. The prize for good work is always extra and more difficult work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Team story, January 30, 2008

I received an advance copy of the book, Stargate SG1: The Barque of Heaven and just recently finished reading it. I am very pleased to say that this story hearkens back to the good old team adventure days. There's something for everyone to do, some really nice team and character moments, with a bit more emphasis on Daniel & Jack. This book reminds me WHY SG1 is the team that I love; they aren't just a team, they are a family and in the story it shows. I wish I could go into further detail as there is just so much that I would like to discuss, but unfortunately that would require spoiling the story. Suffice to say that I recommend this story to anyone who is a team `gen' fan who enjoys the team embark on an (mis)adventure

5.0 out of 5 stars Family team work to a 'T', February 2, 2008
This review is from: Stargate SG-1: The Barque of Heaven: SG-11 (Mass Market Paperback)
I also got the advanced copy. My cover, however, adds Jack on the left and Daniel on the right with the eye in the middle. The author, Suzanne Wood really did a wonderful job in keeping with the characters interactions with each other. The classic lines that Jack always uses and his way of pushing his team on when he knows that it may be impossible. The 'No one gets left behind' is seen here. This book is such a page turner with what seems like endless adventure and suspense, because they have to go through 13 gates and it is the 'what is on the other side' that is so great! Keeps you wanting to read. I highly recommend this book for all SG1 fans!

4.0 out of 5 stars TV show/book tie-in -- and it works!, January 30, 2008
This review is from: Stargate SG-1: The Barque of Heaven: SG-11 (Mass Market Paperback)
Having just finished the advanced copy myself, I agree that it is definitely a good, old-fashioned team story. This shows a group of four people who are more than just a team. They are a family that care about each other. That was a strong emotion and story catalyst in the early years of the show (known online as the "classic years"), and it felt good to see it again in this book.

They worked together to get out of their misadventure, each using their particular field of expertise in a logical manner and performing tasks in-character. There was adventure, angst, fighting, whumping, moments of extraordinary friendship -- everyone had a very strong role in this tale.

All in all, it "felt" and "read" like a classic year story, and that's pretty high praise in my humble opinion.

4.0 out of 5 stars Would have made a great episode arc!, February 11, 2008

This was pretty good for the author's first attempt. I agree with previous reviewers that this brings the group back to the way they were at the beginning of the show, which of course makes sense because the author states it takes place in season three. Although the author gets the sense of team work, commoradery and family feel for the group. I feel as though some of the conversation wasn't quite on target. There were a few moments where I didn't feel she got the characters of Samantha or Daniel right but it didn't detract from the story so that's o.k. Overall I really enjoyed this and look forward to her next one! Let's keep these books coming - I have to get my Daniel fix somehow now that the series is over! : )

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely well done, June 3, 2008

This review is from: Stargate SG-1: The Barque of Heaven: SG-11 (Mass Market Paperback)
This is a fan-tastic book! The characters (O'Neill, Carter, Jackson, Teal'c) are practically perfect, the storyline is unique and fun, and it's a real page turner. I can easily see this one as a great movie. The book takes place in season 3, following the episode "Deadman's Switch" where SG-1 encounters bountyhunter Aris Boch. Here, SG-1 is lead into a trap to endure the "Trial of Moons" designed by the Goa'uld Ra, in which they must travel across 12 planets (surviving the environments and other trials) to find the next stargate address and a spoken password before the timer runs out. The goal of the trial is to arrive at the Barque of Heaven, where Ra would appoint the survivors of the trial to positions of trust in his court. The party who wanted SG-1 lead into this trap shows up near the end to gloat and make sure they die. SG-1 has many clever escapes throughout the book, which is a fun treasure hunt adventure. There are a few references to TV episodes before the time where this book is set, but if you have a passing understanding of Stargate SG-1, then this book can stand very well on its own. Highly recommended!

I have read most of the Stargate SG-1 books available and I find myself re-reading this one over and over. The story is well written and moves along at a good pace. The interaction between the characters of the team is wonderful. There is warmth and humor between the team that rarely shows up in other books. I recommend this book without hesitation to any fan of SG-1.

My favorite book,by far. The characterizations are spot on and the story moves at a very good clip. It would make a great movie. I wish all of the stargate authors could be as familiar with the characters before writing some of the drivel i have read recently. Definately a good read for stargate fans.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Read - Kindle version, May 31, 2010

I agree with the other reviewers that this was a very good story. Although some of the plotting was predictable and cribbed from other stories (Odyssey's Island of Lotus Eaters, anyone?), the strength lies in the character interactions and the emotional ties of the team. Of the Stargate tie-ins that I've read, I agree this one is so far the best. I read the Kindle version and found only a handful of formatting mistakes (misplaced hyphens, odd line breaks), but nothing that detracted from the story. I'm looking forward to the next efforts from this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best SG-1 book so far!!!, February 2, 2010
This review is from: Stargate SG-1: The Barque of Heaven: SG-11 (Mass Market Paperback)
Of all the SG-1 books written, this one has to be the best. It reads like a tv episode, and I wish it had been. The characters all were well written, and the action, and plot line were awesome. If you buy one SG-1 book make this one it!
