1.0 out of 5 stars What a Disappointment!, September 29, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Stargate SG-1: Dialing Up: The Official Guide to Seasons 1-5 (Stargate Sg-1 (Titan Books)) (Paperback)
I was very much looking forward to this book and pre-ordered it as soon as it showed up on Amazon. All I can say is what a disappointment! While full of pictures and descriptions of episodes and miscellaneous other production and cast-related articles, the content itself seems nothing more than a compilation that has been culled from the Official Stargate SG-1 magazine over the course of the past 10+ years. The quality of the photographs themselves are varied...some are very good, but others are little more than fuzzy,sub-par screen caps--the kinds of photos one would expect to find in a magazine of a decade or so back. Worse, the episode descriptions are often written as though the show is still on-going, sometimes with a "let's see what happens with this story-line" type of tag at the end. I found myself re-checking the publication date to see if this book had been previously released, because so much of what was written was out of date, including the quotes from the actors themselves about their character or certain story-lines. It may have been what they thought seven or eight years ago, but time and another 100 episodes and two movies later, things have changed. None of this is reflected in the book.

If one is going to put out an "Official Guide" two years after a series has ended, it would seem incumbent upon them to examine the whole series retrospectively rather than simply re-publish out-dated material. There is so much rich texture to explore in the Stargate SG-1 series: the major and minor story arcs, the characters and their development over time, the humor, the drama, the quality of the writing and directing and production. It's a shame that something that could have been so much more has ended up being so much less. I have many friends who are Stargate fans and I've already warned them to save their money. This is truly a missed opportunity to chronicle a franchise that truly has made a mark in the sci fi world. I hope someday someone will truly do the show justice.

G'day from Downunder,

I purchased this on behalf of a friend who is also a Stargate-SG1 Fan-atic, and she tells me that this book is excellent, she highly recommends it to all fans of the show, I'll be buying a copy, based on her ravings about the book [Not crazy ravings by any means!!]

So all you Stargater's out there in the Cosmos buy the book to show the author she's great.

Regards to all

Jan
