3.0 out of 5 stars Stormwind - Stargate (Actually 3.5 stars) June 22, 2001
Format:Audio CD
Stormwind's last album ended up very high in my Top 25 last year. Resurrection was my first introduction to the band and I was really impressed. When Stargate (Stormwind's second album, originally released in 1998 in Japan), which has been released in Europe for the first time now, dropped in my mailbox I was curious if I would be equally impressed. I'm in all honesty compelled to say that I'm not and that mainly has to do with the production. Neo-classical Metal like this should blast from your speakers, I think. Instead the songs on Stargate sound a bit muffled, which takes away from the listening pleasure a lot. Take the vocals, especially with headphones on you can hear that Angelica Häggström has quite a volume. Trouble is that it just doesn't seem to come out on the album. And the guitars are also a bit behind in the mix, while the bass and the drums are too far up. But it's not just the production, which makes that Stargate is outdistanced by Resurrection. It's also obvious that Thomas Wolf has grown as a songwriter since the release of this second album. Where the tracks on Stormwind's latest sound very balanced and refined, songs that are mainly built around a bit more clichéd riffs characterize Stargate. For the dedicated fans of the genre this won't be a problem, as they'll probably have a ball with this very (old) Yngwie-esque album. People who really want the cream of the crop better stick to the Resurrection album or labelmates Majestic.
