5.0 out of 5 stars Stargazer!!!, July 7, 2001
By
"chaz106" (San Jose, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Stargazer (Audio CD)
I remember walking into a record store back in the fall of '97 and listening to this 12" that came in a crazy looking green and yellow sleeve and being in total awe after listening to it. It became the first trance-record I ever purchased (FRA-002). Because of that purchase, my expectations of other trance tunes was incredibly high. This record spared me wasting money on crappy trance. There were two tracks on this record, "Stargazer" and "Heaven's Gate."

The two EPs for "Stargazer" came out a year or two later (FRA-015 and FRA-016). I didn't bother to pick them up because none of the remixes (even the Deepsky one) was nearly as good as the original version. The remixes tended to explore styles that differed substantially from the original. In the meantime however another tune was released by Deepsky on Fragrant (FRA-012), "Cosmic Dancer." Deepsky had accomplished the daunting task of creating a track that could rival "Stargazer" for being their best work. "Stargazer" and "Cosmic Dancer" are like apples and oranges when it comes to comparing the two - one being more of a journey through space the other being more "worldly", for a lack of a better way to describe it. The Stargazer EP CD is all the tracks from the aforementioned records (FRA-012, FRA-015 and FRA-016) plus a Deepsky remix of Dream Traveler's "Time" (another great tune). The thing that really disappointed me about this CD was the fact that it didn't include "Heaven's Gate", the sister track to "Stargazer". The two tracks complement each other nicely (like many of the `A' and `B' sides of Deepsky related tracks released on Fragrant do). This being the case, it is surprising they didn't include "Heaven's Gate" on the CD. For this reason I am making the following recommendation:

1) If you are only buying this CD because you want a copy of the original version of "Stargazer", then get the Dayspring Collective's album, Spark (for "Heaven's Gate" and other tunes...).

2) If you must have a copy of either the "Stargazer" remixes or "Cosmic Dancer" (and its remix), then buy this CD.

3) If you like Deepsky a lot, then buy both CD's (they only have one track in common, "Stargazer").

Both "Stargazer" and "Cosmic Dancer" are excellent tracks. The remixes are good in particular the X-Cabs remix of "Stargazer" and the "Heads of State remix of "Cosmic Dancer", but all the remixes on this CD are overshadowed by the original Deepsky tracks. Don't judge either of these tracks by their first thirty seconds; they really begin to show what they are made of after about two and a half minutes. If you like high-quality and cheese-free progressive trance you will enjoy these tunes a lot. They leave no doubt why the Kinetic label (home of Sasha and Digweed, DJ Dan, Sandra Collins and other top DJs, artists...and unfortunately that guy from MTV who...anyways...) decided to sign Deepsky.

4.0 out of 5 stars Definite Energy!, February 4, 2001
This review is from: Stargazer (Audio CD)
I acquired this CD only because it happened to be available to me at an insanely cheap price but I would gladly have paid every cent or more of its usual cost after the hours of playing time it has gotten on my stereo. The more I listen to it, the greater complexity seems to be unearthed from this high energy, dynamic EP. This is the CD that gave me an appreciation for the Goa variety of Trance music. I find every remix of Stargazer and the additional tracks to be a must for the EP. It does not at all get repetitious as I had first thought it would. If your looking for an insanely non-stop, danceable, tranceable bunch of tracks get Deepsky, Stargazer!

4.0 out of 5 stars Keep an eye out for these guys...., March 13, 2000

I found Deepsky on the internet and heard some of their stuff. I was pretty impressed as Stargazer is extremely catchy. Track 2 "Cosmic Dancer" is also pretty good with its worldy sound. This Cd is definately worth it and will stay in your tray for a while. Look for their Phuture 2000 remix!

5.0 out of 5 stars Massive 4x4 trancebeats and breaks, December 9, 1999
This review is from: Stargazer Ep (Audio CD)
I first heard Stargazer when it was out on vinyl, and instantly fell in love with it. It just feels incredibly tribalistic, until the part of the song which really feels like youre travelling through the stars. And then when you just don't think it can get any better, it takes off, and goes through the roof. The remixes are OK, but not as good as the original.

Another tip for buying this CD is the "Cosmic dancer" track, It was a surprise to me since I had never heard it before, but this might be one of the best songs I've heard ever. Religous trance is the best I can describe it with, which lifts you off the ground and sends you flying...

5.0 out of 5 stars Techno with hint of Trance = A fantastic CD, June 13, 2000

This is by far my favorite cd. This is a must have cd for anyone that likes dance music in general. This alblum is so good because its techno/trance but it doesn't get to caught up in the super trippy trance sound...Its hard hitting techno (and break beats) with that hint of a light, trance-like efect that comes together to make some of the the best dance music I've ever heard....You just have to listen to it, you'll be amazed. Be sure to check out Track 2 "Cosmic Dancer".

4.0 out of 5 stars Trance with melody, November 29, 1999
By

The original songs are each over 6 minutes long, but because of the melody & the arrangement it doesn't seem that way... The remixes get kind of boring after hearing "Stargazer" 3 times remixed.. it begins to get to you... I can't wait for their complete album release sometime next year(2000). I pop this cd in when I lift weights.. the thumpy music keeps you going!
