Editorial Reviews

A three-song EP, Staring to the Sun is really only suited for listeners wanting something before Scarling's next release. And even that may be pushing it, because Staring to the Sun actually only includes two tracks of unreleased material ("City Noise," with its uncanny resemblance to Interpol's "Evil," was on the band's 2005 full-length So Long, Scarecrow). The title cut is good, with singer Jessicka's sweet voice-over loud and Pixies-like guitars, which is fitting, as Scarling also includes a cover of the Boston band's "Wave of Mutilation." It works well, and if nothing else, shows how indebted Scarling are to Black Francis and Co. It's not a bad release, but its brevity is certainly a bit of a detraction, which means Staring to the Sun is best-left for serious fans only. ~ Marisa Brown, Rovi

5.0 out of 5 stars the Lets-Review-Single, August 24, 2006
This review is from: Staring to the Sun (Audio CD)
First off I can't believe that all of the scarling darlings out there aren't flocking to review this release.

Secondly its Scarling..They could never put out anything bad in my book and this cd is by all means worth the money. I call this the Lets-review-single because when you listen to the lyrics and you have listened to Sweet Heart Dealer and So Long, Scarecrow in and out, backwards and forwards and you know the lyrics you find a distinct correlation and reference to Scarling's past, but with a poppish shoegazing revamp.

The Pixie's cover 'Wave of Mutilation' is an absolutely perfect selection. You hear references, or relations rather, to previous songs such as 'Art of Pretension' and 'Love Becomes a Ghost' right when the song starts out and later ends in the bitter sweet yet all too tragically beautiful cure-like goodbye that you know you was the reason you started listening to scarling to begin with.

"and we tried to change the city noise made us strange..."

4.0 out of 5 stars good non-album tracks, December 31, 2006

Strange thing is: the non-album tracks are better than the song this CD's named for. "City Noise" is a real nice whistful, bittersweet track, and the Pixies cover is good too. Worth it if you like the band.
