Book Description

“Every time you appear on screen someone will die.”

That’s the stark warning given to Jessica Lee, host of a confessional talk show on network television with millions of fans. But one deranged viewer is out to destroy her career. He demands that her programme be scrapped and tells her to stop appearing on TV. To prove he means business he claims his first victim – a young woman who is found dead with her throat cut. Jessica and her bosses face an agonizing dilemma: take the show off the air or risk more murders. They decide to defy the killer, for fear of setting a dangerous precedent. But there are dire consequences.

5.0 out of 5 stars A GREAT Read September 8, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Many reviewers give away some or much of the story line. I won't do that.

What I will say is this is a really good read.

Grpping story line - doesn't let up for a minute and will keep you glued to your Kindle.
Well characterised but imperfect protagonists - somewhat flawed, like most of us !

Last, but by no means least, no spelling or grammatical errors - SUCH a welcome surprise, when unfortunately so many Kindle versions are poorly edited or not even spell-checked.

I do wish authors would take note of this last point. It's very off-putting and detracts hugely from the impact their inspired and hard work has on their readers.

I will definitely look for more by James Raven.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book had me until the very end! November 17, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I truly enjoy mysteries, crime dramas and anything forensic. That draws me to books such as Stark Warning where a serial killer is cleverly picking off his targets. I had knots in my stomach and felt my pulse quicken throughout the entire book. Truly a thriller with a mystery that had me stumped until the very end.

What I liked about the style of writing is that Mr. Raven writes the story from the main character's perspective; a detective/inspector who has strong observation skills. So, as he is introduced to people, Quinn describes them in what reads like notes. When he arrives at crime scenes he notes everything from smells to sounds to sights. He concludes based on the facts he observes. This helped me, as the reader, feel like I was in his head. It was pretty cool and I enjoyed this style of writing.

Now, most times, I can figure out the killer before the end of the story. This time, I couldn't! However, I did know the killer's location. I was thrown for a few loops there at the end and I actually had my mouth hanging open at one point. It was truly a great read...I'd definitely call it a great thriller and worth every penny of the asking price.

The back of "Stark Warning" by James Raven immediately caught my interest because of the subject matter. How often have you thought, "If I see that celebrity on tv one more time, I am going to poke my eyes out!" Well "Stark Warning" takes it a morbid dark step further.
Raven does an excellent job in bringing the pulp like murder fiction to life. Raven joins the ranks of the greats, previous Pulp Fiction writers such as Dashiell Hammett, and Ray Bradbury.
Told in a first person narrative, Sam Quinn is the lead detective on the "Celebrity Squad" A squad formed to investigate the rising number of serial like killings of the famous. After a tragedy that blindsides Sam, he falls into a depression and reverts to his old ways of gambling and losing( online poker too sheesh). When I came to this part of the story I was a little put off and thought, "Is this the hero of the book?"( Yes I am old fashioned) Then I continued to read along and came across this passage;
Excerpt:
"As I stared down at the figure on the ground, I experienced an intense feeling of sadness. Life is so arbitrary, I thought. At the end of the day it's all about luck. Maybe that is why I gamble. Everything I do is a risk, every day could be my last. So I try whenever I can to beat the odds."-Sam Quinn from Stark Warning

This is me, being put in my place.

Sam just explained to me why he was addicted to gambling after his tragedy( since I didn't figure it out on my own). I liked that the writer just then, gave a little more depth so Sam.

All in all Stark Warning is a quick ,fun ,dark read for fans of mystery and thrillers.

5.0 out of 5 stars British crime mystery September 10, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Good writing with just enough suspects to keep you guessing without bogging the reader down with too many avenues. The romance element is nicely done also, and doesn't highjack the story. I appreciated the fact that the characters didn't meet on one page, and are in bed the next. Very entertaining.

I was burnt out on thrillers until I happened upon this one sheer accident. I actually thought it might be a book on the craft of writing concisely at first. Anyway, the story exceeded my expectations in every area. James Raven, in my opinion, would be very qualified to teach a master's class on suspense writing. He manages to impart personal and meaningful character development without hindering the action for a second. The book moves at breakneck speed. I finished it over a 24 period. Simply couldn't put the iPad down. I'll be onto the next one by him tonight or tomorrow. If I could give this six stars I would. As a writer myself, author of GRIDLOCK, A Scientific Thriller, I could not recommend this book more highly.

Detective Chief Inspector Sam Quinn is married to a British actress and is part of the privileged elite. When Scotland Yard sets up a serial killer task force to find "The Celebrity Killer," they decide Sam would be the perfect person to lead it. When an event happens that turns his life upside down, he finds himself headed down an old, familiar, and destructive path.
This is an exciting crime novel with unexpected twists and turns. I enjoyed reading it and will be checking out some of the author's other books.

This is a well we written story. I did not want to stop reading this book when I started. I do not like to give out very much information on a book that I read because I want people to enjoy reading the book and finding it enjoyable. I recommend this book to the reader's because it has action, romance, feelings of not being able to control what is going on. I enjoyed reading this book and will probably read it again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Intense
The build-up is methodical and the ending is tense. All in all, it's a good thriller-mystery with some angst of the hero thrown in for more humanity.

The story line was great. It kept you guessing as to who the suspect was. The grammar was different as this was by a British writer. I would read more by this author.
