5.0 out of 5 stars excellent accoustic session
Very very good! Coverdale can still sing! Adrian played accoustic guitar peacefully...enjoyable and relaxing music! I still love one old song of Deep Purple number (during Coverdale days in the 70) "Soldier of fortune". What a lovely song ballad! 1.0 out of 5 stars A complete waste.
After listening to a second of each of the songs on this CD, the listener will undoubtedly realize that Whitesnake songs just don't sound good with just vocals and (horrible sounding) guitar. They sound far too empty. These are songs that NEED heavy drums, keyboard, bass, and electric guitar. It's respectable that Coverdale didn't forget about the band who got him on...

David Coverdale is a Hard rock singer who has combinated the cool sound between Deep Purple and Zeppelin. I think he did not mean to copy Robert Plant style on his new band Whitesnake, he just only combinated the Deep Purple and Zeppelin sound together. the result is brain melting

4.0 out of 5 stars NOW THIS IS UNPLUGGED!, December 22, 1999
By
This review is from: Starkers in Tokyo (Audio CD)
Wow, this is one killer live album. There is no drums, no bass, no keyboards, no back-up vocals, just a single voice and a single guitar. Whitesnake has been around just over 20 years since this release, and it proves to be one of David Coverdale's finest. Yea, his voice doesn't have it's range like it did in the 80's, but he can still melt your heart when he sings them ballads. Not surprisingly, that what Starkers In Toyko contains most of, slow blues burners and late 80's ballads, with a few newer tunes thrown in. It opens with Sailing Ships(one of the two here from Slip of the Tongue), a relaxing rendition that sets the tone for most of the show. Slipping next into the mournful Too Many Tears(1 of 3 Restless Heart songs, I also revieve that awesome album), David pouring his heart and emotion into the song. About halfway through, from 1987's S/T album comes the show rev-upper Give Me All Your Love, and the audience loving it. The last three songs are excellent, Is This Love, the heavy Here I Go(which is about the fastest song performed) and Solider of Fortune. The latter being a lovely addition, digging into his Purple bag of tricks. As for the guitar player, Adrian Vandenberg(hot-shot 80's guitar virtuoso) he is fantastic all the way, not to mention David's perfect guitar player. All-in-all , a relaxing, comfortable listen that will soothe you from a rough day. The only track that would have been perfect for this would have been Slow n' Easy, after one listen to this, you'll know why!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sit back and relax to Whitesnake!, July 4, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Starkers in Tokyo (Audio CD)
I never thought I would be using the words "relax" and "Whitesnake" in the same sentence, but there you have it. An outstanding live, acoustic album. This is probably the best one I've ever heard. It's a great example of how simple can really be better. David singing and Adrian on guitar and nothing else! The small audience and the intimate setting only serves to heighten the feeling of David singing live in your living room! A great album to relax to and soothe your nerves after a hard day. As a side note, I understand that David also performed "Fool For Your Loving" which was not included on this album for some reason. He also attempted Adrian's "Burning Heart," but this was not included as he forgot the words!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very pleasant relaxing listening, October 9, 1999

David+Adrian prove that a song has to have a solid foundation to sound good. All the guitars+drums+effects don't do any good if the songs suck. These songs DO NOT suck. The songs sound good because of the emotion put into them by the performers.David sings every word like they come straight from his soul.He is so "into it"that he sometimes has trouble singing, and not doing the "Tarzan vocal"(His words, not mine). The emotion in his voice is unmistakeable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Coverdale can still sing, June 5, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Starkers in Tokyo (Audio CD)
David Coverdale sounds superb. His voice sounds smooth and yet packed with emotion. This version of "soldier of Fortune" is worth the price of the disc alone; but there is so much more. All of the Whitesnake songs shine here, as once you remove all of the layers screaming guitars, loud vocals, and thundering drums, you have a good pop song. My only critcism is that it's light on guitar work.

5.0 out of 5 stars as intimate as one can get, April 2, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Starkers in Tokyo (Audio CD)
This album could be titled: "Whitesnake Unplugged". One great voice. One great guitar. David Coverdale and Adrian Vandenberg perform to a small audience. It has such an intimate feeling to it that one feels that they are part of the audience.Classic Whitesnake songs are mixed with new Whitesnake. Some songs are from the "Restless Heart" album. This CD and "Restless Heart" compliment each other perfectly. This is one of the best "unplugged" albums from any band out there.

There is one thing I have to say before my review: I love David Coverdale's voice. I've been following him since his days in Deep Purple.
Starkers is a really good album, Covs has a really great performance and Adrian Vandenberg does a fantastic job with the arrangements, and his playing is top notch.
Like I said I love Coverdale, and if you are a whitesnake fan I feel this CD is an essential purchase.

Great acoustic CD featuring David Coverdale and Adrian Vandenberg. It is performed in Japan in front of what sounds like a room of 20 very lucky people. Great sound quality and a really enjoyable CD. Seller shipped the CD fast, it arrived in good condition and exactly as stated in product description. Great seller and would have no problem buying from again.

5.0 out of 5 stars "in puris naturalibus", September 10, 2007
This review is from: Starkers in Tokyo (Audio CD)
Among the unplugged rock performances i have experienced lifetime, this is the most outstanding one. Speechless about Mr.Coverdale's vocal performance. I believe, no one on the earth could add more to these songs performing them. But feel I must also note that Mr.Vanderberg's existance adds what ever needed to flourish.

This is a unique example to show nothing is needed more to rock then a man singing accompanied by a guitar.

Highly reccomended not only for Whitesnake fans but also anyone who would like to listen music at the purest soulfull state.

4.0 out of 5 stars A nice effort..., December 19, 2005
This review is from: Starkers in Tokyo (Audio CD)
I've been a Whitesnake fan for quite a long time already, but what can I say about this album? As far as I'm concerned David Coverdale has done an amazing work in whatever he's ever been involved with...So this album doesn't fail my expectations at all...All of the songs flow really well and sound great too even if they're in a stripped down format, which means that as artists they have good dynamics (meaning that they're able to make the songs any way they desire)..Plus as mr.Coverdale confesses in the inner sleeve of the album and in many interviews, their songs are written in acoustic guitars,so everything must have come out quite naturally..
Apart from some "mistakes" (not really that traceable) that are natural to live performances (of this kind especially) that mr.Vandenberg does,it sounds really live and straightforward, which I'd describe it(if I was allowed to lend a description of a previous reviewer)as if it is actually played in your own room,or house for that matter..So good are the production values of the album itself..
Ending this "review" I'm gonna finish with one other line of the inner sleeve:Fast,Slow,Loud or Soft as long as the integrity and emotional essence is intact...And this live album has both of those traits...
