It's a pity Pike has been known mostly as a teen hack-and-slash writer (as one reviewer thinks so). Granted his novels do fall into the horror genre, it's his writing style that sets him apart from the mindnumbing blandness that plagues the teen fiction market. He's obviously an intelligent man with a dark yet remarkable sense of humour.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Bit Disappointed Overall
I remember this fondly from when I was a kid, so when I found my old copy at the bottom of a drawer I was cleaning out, I figured I'd give it another read.

Time sure twists perspective.

It's not a bad book by any means, but its 190 some odd pages felt more like an outline for a series rather than a fulfilling standalone book. There were a great...

It's a pity Pike has been known mostly as a teen hack-and-slash writer (as one reviewer thinks so). The Starlight Crystal is one of my favourite books. I first read it when I was 14; I'm 20 now. Since then, I've read it many times more and each time, I'm still as moved as the first. If you're expecting lots of blood and gore, look elsewhere. Pike is one of those authors who knows that it's possible to instill greater fear without using sentences like "he stabbed her until her intestines spilled out onto the floor."

This novel starts off with Paige, who gets herself involved in a relationship with a young man, Tem, just before she's set to follow her father on a journey into space for a very long time. Tem is a wonderful character whose faith that their love will prevail against all odds is especially sweet. Pike masterfully weaves an ancient theme with a futuristic one, resulting in a tale full of witty lines and excellent character development. I especially love Paige and Tem's first meeting.

As mentioned earlier, one of Pike's best points is his adeptness at building characters, and making you fall in love with them. Paige's strength and courage, Tem's wit and persistence, the relationship between Paige and her father... all memorable. At times, admittedly, the story might get a bit confusing but in the end, everything falls into place and you'll go, "Geez, that was brilliant."

Read this book. I highly recommend it. And when you're done, pick up "Remember Me" and "The Midnight Club." If only there were more authors like him.

5.0 out of 5 stars Glorious, January 22, 2001
At 20, I might not belong to the intended age-group for Pike's YA novels. But I can still remember reading them a couple of years ago, and every now and then I re-read one or two of them, just because they are so amazing.

This is one book that I have read a lot of times, because it's so astonishing! I just love the melancholy that simmers within every page until the very end. Still there is so much hope embedded in this story, along with a very philosophical approach to life. The thought of life living itself on and on again is scary, although fascinating.

When I picked up the first one of Christopher Pike's books, I had no idea what to expect. But I was totally blown away by the mystical drama about love and hate that was "See you later". Of course I didn't stop at that one.

The starlight crystal is trully one of the best YA novels Pike has written. I even wish it wasn't called a YA novel, since nobody is too old or too mature to appreciate the wisdom printed on the pages of this wonderful book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible story, March 30, 2003
I have to agree with another reviewer of this book - this is one of the best stories I have ever read.

This book is not a "science fiction" tale - it's a spiritual journey, told through the medium of science fiction. This is one of the best explanations I've seen of the Buddhist/Hindu goal of spiritual enlightenment.

Reading this story was an incredible experience - one of those rare moments, when I feel my deepest contemplations have been understood by another.

Very, very well done!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful!, September 2, 2000
What words can I use to describe such a beautiful and inspiring story? I have read this book so many times, but yet everytime I do, I find myself becoming more and more enchanted by Mr. Pike's words. You clearly have to go beyond the surface of this story to really grasp the depth of just how spiritually written it is. This is absolutely my favourite book by Mr. Pike. It gives the feeling that there's something more out there for us. That our concept of life as we know it becomes even that much more complex and gradifying. But I think that it was Paige's undying love for Tem that really gets to me. She created her whole life, and our entire universe based of that love. She opposed all odds, and had to go on to fullfill a destiny that no one person could ever imagine possible, and to come to a conclusion that could never belong to a person unless they were as brave as she was.

5.0 out of 5 stars True love conquers all, June 4, 2003

I picked this book randomly on a shelf one day and it has since become one of my favourite books.
A week from leaving Earth for 100 years, a young Captain's daughter, Paige meets Tem and falls in love. Little does she know that she will spend the rest of her 'endless' life trying to get back to him.
A beautifully written story of fate, reincarnation, time and the universe.
This is one you have to pay attention to otherwise you may miss the finer pieces. Read it and I promise you wont regret it.

I read this book a good decade ago, and the story has stuck with me since. I've never forgotten it, but until now never really remembered to buy it, either.

Now I've got my own copy again, and after reading through it I can feel how some of the writing is more...immature than I remember, it's still one of those stories that you'll never quite forget. It has an immense feeling of...time and of emotion that I haven't quite felt in a lot of books. If you're into sci-fi and want to read a story that encompasses the entire life of the universe, try this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just for young adults..., February 3, 2007
This review is from: The STARLIGHT CRYSTAL (Hardcover)
I read this book when it first came out, and I cannot tell you how many times I have read it since. List another reviewer said, this is not a science fiction story, but a spiritual journey told through science fiction. It is one of the few books I have read that I have to put down while reading to think about its message before continuing. The lessons that you learn in this story can be put to use at all times, and this book is definately not just for young adults.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great by Christopher Pike, May 27, 2004
A Kid's Review
This is the story of 18 yr old Paige. Paige has been given the chance to join the crew on the Traveler a spacesip/time capsule that is set to travel 200 years into the future. But durning Paige's last week on earth she meets Tem they promise to write each other and as the story unfolds the letters become important. When she takes off on the Traveler she has promised that she will see Tem again but while on the Traveler their is a problem, will she ever see Tem again you'll just have to read it and see. A wonderfully written story that in a way reminds me of another of his novels Season of Passage another one of Pike's books set in space. Happy Reading!

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning, April 13, 2001
A Kid's Review
This is possibly the best book I have ever read. It is beautifully written. Christopher Pike's space/time theories are very interesting and prevoke much thought. Parts of the book are sort of confusing. It is very sad, I was crying after the fourth page. Sometimes the best books are the ones that make you feel sad. This kind of book stays with you forever.
