Star Lit Sunken Ship: a lugubrious delight,
By
This review is from: Starlit Sunken Ship (Audio CD)
Rather intimate in its sound, SLSS is sad, pretty music to fall asleep to. Lead singer Carolyn Berk's voice is somewhere between Nico and early Jewel, and the lugubrious nature is unmistakable. "Ginger" is a particularly heartbreakingly beautiful song that grows on you. The unusual chorus of aching vocals and lonesome violin will have you wishing the clouds were raining outside. A similarly melancholy song, "Winter Takes a Lover," supplies the listener with a very original-sounding song that conjures up another place in time completely. An incredibly indelicate chorus of voiced "aah's" become surprisingly beautiful with high and low musical intonations. There is an underlying desperate sense to this song that is very attractive indeed. Lyrically, the band lacks little. Odd words strung together create images and emotions that are well-suited to the sound these songs create. Similar themes of loss between the songs devise a common flow to the album. Overall, this CD offers a very mature, emotion-ridden journey through what sound like personal hells in a truly captivating manner. Perhaps it is this peculiar juxtaposition that makes for so interesting a listen.

Star Lit Sunken Ship is a great album to own,

Beautiful, sad, and amazing, the Lovers are truly a band to listen to on a rainy day when things are quiet and peaceful. Dream Lover/Squid Suit is my favorite currently but there isn't really a track I don't love. I wish they would come back to New York & play again.
