3.0 out of 5 stars Like Bowie himself, it's hit or miss..., July 3, 2011

As is usual with these tribute albums, some nail it, some miss by a country mile and there are a few surprises.

I'm always a fan of when a confident artist takes anothers' well-known song and runs with it, in a totally unexpected direction - Hence, the Gourd's revved-up bluegrass rip through "Ziggy Stardust", or the Langley Schools Project's unsettling version of "Space Oddity". Breaths of fresh air, both.

Being as these are POP SONGS, and not HOLY SCRIPTURE, they are all fair game - As were the 50's classics that the artists being covered (like Bowie, the Beatles or the Who) took considerable liberties with, when they were finding their own voices. And, as such...the Beatles version of "Besame Mucho" is as regrettable as Blondie's sloppy run through "Heroes".

I had high hopes for noted glam fan Alejandro Escovedo's version of "All The Young Dudes" (Especially as I've heard him do it a few times at his concerts), but the one on this disc was a tad rote. Better luck next time.

The expected "art" and "new wave" versions by performers such as Midge Ure, Ian McCullough and Peter Murphy were exactly that - Expected, rather predictable, and none of them bring anything particularly new or original to their contributions.

The one that caught me off-guard was Culture Club's trip-hoppy take on "Starman" - The beat box rhythms actually work quite well with the original son's structure. Too bad that CC run it into the ground by dragging it out for an unnecessary extra three minutes.
