4.0 out of 5 stars STARMANIA!
This show features some of the strongest voices ever to perform STARMANIA. It certainly features the cleanest orchestrations.

Since it is one of the few recordings of STARMANIA done in a studio, the words of the songs are intelligible by English speakers with even minimal French skills.

1.0 out of 5 stars Uninspired Musical
This better than Les Mis and Miss Saigon? I suppose tastes vary... or I suppose that unfortunately too many young people have no clue about musical theatre whatsoever. This is a rock opera that tries too hard to be entertaining. Except the lyrics are laughable, the music unvaried, insipid, and doesn't even back the story. Luce Dufault is the only standout in a cast...

I teach Theatre and French in a high school and always do a Unit on STARMANIA/LES MISERABLE and MISS SAIGON with my second-year French students (all of these are by French composers) and my students unanimously perfer this recording to any of the others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Starmania is an amazing passionate musical, June 6, 2001

I stumbled upon this musical when living in France and was blown away. The music is amazingly beautiful and the voices are incredible. There is such passion in the ballads, which is where this CD really shines. All of the slow songs remind me of smoky bars and sultry torch songs. Forget Phantom of the Opera, this is the true music of the night.

Great, even if you don't speak French.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent chef d'oeuvre, a must listen, May 13, 1999
I've never listened a rock-opera like Starmania, rarely had a feeling of such compatibility of the sound with lyrics. Thanks a lot for both Michel Berger and Luc Plomondon. Also all the french & french-canadian singers and Daniel Balavoine for their unforgettable participation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, the complete story of Starmania. It's great!, April 8, 2001
By
Rafael Mestre (Mexico D.F., Mexico Mexico) - See all my reviews
Starmania is a French/Canadian Rock Opera which had great success in France in the 1980s. The story is very appealing and the music is facinating. Unfortunatelly most of the recordings (and there are several) there had been of the different mises en scene of Starmania were incomplete. This one is the total version including the narrator explanation of what is happening. If you are familiar with Starmania, you don't want to miss this recording. If you are not, you may very well start here. I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE ORIGINAL CAST ALBUM, May 29, 2002
By
ALAIN ROBERT (ST-HUBERT,QUÉBEC) - See all my reviews
STARMANIA is one of the few classics among the FRENCH musicals. Many versions with different singers are available, but this is the original with GALL,DUFRESNE,THIBEAULT and BELAVOINE.The future versions of the show will be more flamboyant and theatrical. The first collaboration between LUC PLAMONDON the lyric writer from QUÉBEC and MICHEL BERGER still hits home ,with it's futurist theme of the teléévangelists invading our lives and the need to breath in non polluted environnement. Many singers from QUÉBEC have started their careers with the revivals of this show. The songs are so well known in QUÉBEC, that most of us know them by heart, which i think tells a lot about it's non stop success over the years.

This is a cd version of the 1978 Canadian success & it plays well. However, I still have the cassette version and strange as this may sound, the quality seems a little bit better. Nevertheless, the quality of the cd version is still good after all these years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still Astonishing After 30 Years, December 9, 2007

Those who travel are constantly astonished by the phenomenon of music that takes the entire world by storm...all, that is, except for the United States. Starmania is just such a phenom.

This gorgeous rock opera, a collaboration between the late great Michel Berger of France and Luc Plamondon of Quebec, melds two French-speaking cultures into an interpretation of what the authors saw as an Orwellian-1984-ish future sure to arrive come the new millenium.

I understand minimal French but have been enthralled by this musical for thirty years now. The arrangements and orchestration are lush and inventive, as are the concept and lyrics. A sad and woefully misguided attempt was made to cross over into English in the 90s by employing Tim Rice of Evita fame to "translate" the lyrics. Bizarrely, the inspired original title "Starmania" was changed to "Tycoon", and the cast included Celine Dion, Cyndi Lauper, Tom Jones and other great stars.

Tim Rice did an absolutely deplorable job with "Tycoon", completely losing his way by essentially re-writing the Starmania story via lyrics that captured none of the brilliance, classic simplicity or nuance of French lyricist Luc Plamondon.

This CD is eminently rewarding, although my version, purchased in the 80s, was disappointingly trimmed down from the original double album to fit the CD's then-70 minute legth limitation. If the entire original musical is now on CD, get that. But if not, hunt down the original double vinyl album.
