Product Description

The Starrett 117E center punch with round shank is 5" long and has a 1/4" (6.5 mm) diameter tapered point. The punch is made from hardened and tempered steel, which provides wear resistance and strength. The round shank is knurled for grip.

Center punches make small dimple marks in a workpiece to help guide a drill bit. Manual center punches have a metal shank with a point and are typically tapped with a ball-peen hammer to mark the material. Automatic center punches have an internal spring mechanism that enables them to mark the material without using a hammer, leaving one hand free for steadying the work.

The L.S. Starrett Company manufactures precision measuring tools, metrology and testing equipment, and saw blade products. The company, founded in 1880, is headquartered in Athol, MA.

There is not too much to say about a center punch. It is a center punch and it does, indeed, make a good indentation to start a drilled hole in the right place. What is special about this center punch is the fact that I was able to buy it. Before I looked on Amazon I went to three hardware stores none of which had a center punch. Two of the stores had so-called automatic punches which have two distinct disadvantages: they cost more and it is not possible to exactly locate where the punch will make its indentation.

The picture on Amazon is deceptive: you will receive one punch, not a set. While I was not deceived, I did take a star off my rating to draw any reader's attention to this un-picture-perfect situation.

This canter punch is great. It has a great feel to it... the weight is good and the knurled shank is better than I had hoped for. I work in a small metal fabrication shop, and when I took the punch into work a small handful of my co-workers got quite envious and now I need to order punches for them.
This is a great tool. It will be an asset to any metal worker's toolbox.

I don't have a lot of experience with center punches, but this works pretty well. I've used it on hitch steel and the aluminum body on my truck and it's worked. Punches a small <1mm indention to allow you to mark your spot. I highly recommend pre-drilling on said spot with a smaller drill bit before using a significantly larger drill bit to prevent uncontrollable creep.

This is punch is utilized infrequently but does what it is supposed to do. It is smooth and a good length.

Used this effectively to loosen bolts on a couple of cars. One bolt was hard to get to and still wouldn't budge after removing a bunch of stuff to give room to get in there. I spent a lot of time trying to get it, even with decent penetrating oil. This center punch ended up being the answer. The other was a huge mounting bolt on a control arm. Worked again. This is heavy, durable, and precise. If you use a center punch to loosen a fastener, you might consider replacing the fastener, which is normal..

Carefully read the details of this product. Though it shows what looks like a set of center punches, you only get one. That is what the wording indicates so ignore the picture. The punch is nothing special and a little over priced in my opinion.

I love this punch. I use it to mark holes to be punched on hot rolled carbon steel. Hundreds of holes later, it is still super pointy. I've been using a crappy punch for years. This was an upgrade in grip, accuracy, and mark quality. Thanks Obama.
