double square vs combo square,
By Conifer (Los Altos Hills, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Starrett 13A Double Square With Hardened Blade (Tools & Home Improvement)
I own both and use the double square 'twice' as much as the combo--just feels better in your hand, and it is practically indestructible if dropped. Changing the blade orientation requires you pushing up on the tightening mechanism and holding as you insert the blade groove. It would be nice to have a 1/8th--1/16th marking on both sides. I rarely have a need for the 1/32-64th markings.

Love this Square,
This review is from: Starrett 13A Double Square With Hardened Blade (Tools & Home Improvement)
I spent years building projects using the standard "sort-a-square" you find at the hardware store. I always thought the Starret's were ridiculously priced and I refused to buy one. Needless to say many a project was almost perfect. Finally broke down and bought my first Starret Comb Square a few years ago and ever since it is the first layout tool I reach for!
I have the 12" combo square and this 4" Double Square. I love how accurate these squares are! They may seem on the pricey side but they are the most accurate and most used tools in my shop! The 4" never leaves my side.

I am a professional cabinetmaker and I would highly recommend this tool for anyone that needs accurate layout and checking machines for square. I have had other squares that were adequate, but this tool is the best there is.

Good square, but Lee Valley Double Square is better,

I like this square, but the Lee Valley equivalent is better than the Starrett. It is easier to read because of the matt finish on the steel. The Lee Valley square slides easier and is slightly larger and thicker as well.

Great tool, but you can pay less for same accuracy,
This review is from: Starrett 13A Double Square With Hardened Blade (Tools & Home Improvement)
Like others, I too revere the consistent accuracy of my Starrett tools and cannot say anything bad about them, except for the price.
In this particular (and rare) case, you can get the same accuracy with the "Lee-Valley Precision Double square", item number: 24N08.01. It too is guaranteed to be within + / - .001" per foot. It has the same design and is also made in the USA, but it costs significantly less... seventeen-fifty less... about thirty-two percent. They have a six-inch model for only two dollars more. Budget minded woodworkers who want this type of square can get the same performance for less from Lee Valley.com. Same feel, same look, same accuracy, same features... fewer ducats.

This is the second time I have ever been moved to leave a review for a product I have gotten on amazon. I cannot recommend this double square enough. Really quality product, heavy and well made. Absolutely perfect, great size because it fits in a apron pocket or coat pocket easily. You probably want to get a larger Starrett combo square too, but for checking tools or other measuring devices as well as taking small measurements, this tool cannot be surpassed. The price may seem a little steep, but there is probably no greater favor you can do yourself and your projects than having dead accurate measuring devices.

expected accuracy,

Originally I purchased a double square from Rockler, but on close inspection I found that it wasn't accurate. This one though is dead on an built to last, just what you'd expect from a quailty American made tool.

As expected the square arrived perfectly square. (Checking for square is easy: Use the square to make a line perpendicular to a reference line. Flip the square over and repeat. The two lines should be perfectly parallel.)
This is an easily pocketed measuring tool, perfect for laying out woodworking joints, for checking table saw blade for square, and for measuring smaller items. The ruled lines are precise and easy to read. The risk is that I might lose it and have to buy another--but other than that a superior piece of equipment with no apparent faults.
