  • Easily applied by snapping on to end of either anvil or spindle, thus permitting two attachments to be used together
  • Balls are hardened, measure 0.200" in diameter, and move freely in the retainer, insuring positive contact with anvil and spindle
  • The diameters, 0.200" of each ball used must be subtracted from the micrometer reading
  • Applied for Nos. 216, 231, 436.1, 733, 734, 1212 and 1230 micrometers, 0.250" diameter anvil and spindle

The Starrett Micrometer Ball Attachment is an ideal accessory, because it is much cheaper (<$12) than buying a micrometer with a spherical or interchangeable anvil. I find it especially handy when I have to measure the thickness of curved items, such as bearing inserts and tubing walls. This ball attachment is quite easy to install, as it simply fits over the flat anvil on the micrometer frame, being held firmly in place by a spring collet. The only drawback is that the user must remember to subtract the ball diameter (.200") from the indicated reading. There are several different models of this attachment, each sized to fit the particular model of micrometer you have.

Though you can't see the center interior I will tell you, yes the plastic collar holds the bearing however you have absolute bearing to anvil contact. in other words subtract .200 from your measure and pow! It's that easy and you don't need a second set of Micrometers.

These work great. They are stout. made from spring steel. If you break 'em you have been abusing them. Make sure you order the correct ones. Starrett mic's have different spindle diameters depending on the model. 5 tenths makes difference.

The metal material that houses the ball is very brittle. When I tried to install it on my (non-Starrett) micrometer, the metal housing broke, rendering the whole thing useless. I replaced it with a similar (non-Starrett) product at 1/3 the price. It came with a rubber housing for the ball, and even provided an extra ball. The rubber housing fit on the anvil of my micrometer and I made all the bearing measurements I wanted to with no problem.

I had hoped for much better performance from this. The anvil of my (non-Starrett) micrometer was 0.005" (2%) too large, so their product snapped. Booo!!
