I inherited my father's Starrett straight-edge like this model. It is still perfectly straight, parallel and flat after six decades of use. Average the cost over the lifetime of a fine tool. Good tools are cheaper in the long run. With care, you won't need to buy another and accurate work means fewer mistakes and less waste. Happily, the Starrett company still upholds their stringent quality standards and still manufactures these in the USA.

I was suprised when the package arrived, the box felt like it had lead in it. But when I opened it, it was the
straight edge that weighed so much. this thing is heavy and it came well packed. wraped in some kind of paper
soaked in thin oil. I had been using my powermatic model 64A tablesaw for 10 years and thought it was set up
straight and coplaner. When I checked it with my new straight edge the right extension wing was drooped down
at the outside about .012" I loosened the bolts on the wing and shimmed below the bolts and brought it into
alignment. Then the table board had to be brought up to the extension wing. when I set my saw up I used a four
foot level, I can't believe the level was off that bad. I also used the starret to correct the fence on my
shaper, you would not believe the difference it made.
Bottom line if you are having trouble getting true cuts from your tablesaw, shaper, or jointer then I suggest
you break down and buy the best straight edge on the market, you will not be sorry. My only regret is that I
did not break down a long time ago.

This is supposed to be a "precision" measuring instrument. Yet its packaged from Starrett as if its a pack of bubble gum. I had to return the first one I received because it was dropped at some point and one corner was bent. This is very likely due to Starrett's packaging. The 380-36 was wrapped like a pack of gum with an inside paper wrapper and an equally form fitting outside cardboard box. No padding, no foam, nothing. Not even an outside marking for "Handle with care".

If they are not going to treat their products any better then a pack of gum, I can't rate it any higher.

BTW my C33H-12-4R arrived placed in a plastic bag inside a loose fitting box.

Massive metal strip. Great precision. But I am taking one star off for following 3 reasons.

1) It would have been really nice if Starrett would have thought of making two elongated holes in the middle to facilitate handling (like the one made by Groz has, which I saw at local Rockler store), much easier to hold the edge without worrying about slipping off your hands.
2) The finish is rough. Would have been nice if it was polished a little bit. This may not be issue for others though.
3) No protective cover ? An instrument this precision and this expensive, I certainly would expect some kind of protective casing with it.

Overall, highly highly recommended.

I got this to calibrate my jointer table. It does the job and it is comforting to know that it is the single most straightest item I have located anywhere.

Once again Starrett shows why they have no equal! The 36 inch steel straight edge we bought is dead straight, exceeding even Starrett's own statement of accuracy. There may be cheaper alternatives but in my experience buying once well is far superior to buying based upon price alone! It also doesn't hurt that this is an American product made by American workers!
