Product Description

The starrett no. 86 Combination hand and bench vise has a wide range of uses for all toolmakers, mechanics, hobbyists and do-it-yourselfers. When a vise is needed at different locations for convenience, this tool is indispensable. By removing the handle and substituting the clamp, the tool may be fastened to benches, shelves, etc., approximately 1/2" 2-1/8" (13- 54mm) in thickness, and can be adjusted to different positions according to the user's preference. When used as a hand vise, the leverage obtainable with the ball end lever will be appreciated in comparison with a wing nut commonly employed for this purpose. The jaws are made from forgings and are properly tempered.

There is no better or more versatile and usable vise made by anyone in the world today than this one. The precision of the manufacturing is unmatched, there is no slop anywhere. The ability to use it as a handheld or table vise is invaluable. Starrett is an over 100 year old company who still makes the vast majority of their tools in the USA. While you can focus on the price of this product, I can tell you it is not just a tool, it is also a work of art. What you buy is not simply a tool for a purpose but also one that will be passed on and used 100 years from now. For evidence of that, see all the 100 year old Starrett tools for sale today. Men go to their graves giving up everything but not until the bitter end do they let go of their favorite tools. Again for proof of that, note how many estate sales are where you find Starrett tools. If that isn't enough, try calling Starrett with a question and you will find a person answering the phone who exudes the same excellence you will find in their tools. I am so tired of lower quality non-committed throw away products, I am the thankful that a company like Starrett lives on to produce products such as this.

I bought the combo hand vise with clamp because the vise-only product took too long before it would ship. I was reluctant to buy the combo set because I wasn't sure how the vise connected to the clamp. Couldn't be easier -- the vise head unscrews from the wooden handle. Then, the thread post of the vise head passes through the knuckle of the clamp and there is a wing-nut that screws the vise head firmly in place.
