5.0 out of 5 stars Great Tool!
The Starrett CP505A-12 ProSite Protractor is a great step-up over the original. 1.0 out of 5 stars Inaccurate - not even close
I bought this after reading all the favorable reviews, but my experience was quite different. The tool is a full degree off just from one side of the scale to the other. That is, one part of the scale reads 90 while another part of the same scale reads 89. Is it laser engraved? I can't say, but it certainly is not precision. 5.0 out of 5 stars Great Tool!, September 22, 2008
This review is from: Starrett CP505A-12 ProSite Combination Protractor (Tools & Home Improvement)
The Starrett CP505A-12 ProSite Protractor is a great step-up over the original. The improved version includes the angle/miter-cut reader that made the first one so popular, along with some added features. What's new is a table on the back that gives the user an easy reference for setting compound miter angles for any wall configuration. On a recently completed crown moulding job with various angled walls, the compound miter table did all of the math; that feature alone makes it worth the price. In addition there is a protractor and roof pitch scale on the back. I would highly recommend this protractor to anyone who regularly deals with angles in their work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must have layout tool, January 7, 2009

This review is from: Starrett CP505A-12 ProSite Combination Protractor (Tools & Home Improvement)
This is an excellent tool that has many features. It is heavy and well-made, and the movement of the legs is smooth but retains the angle well. It is nice that the dial face and outer scale are etched- not a plastic decal. The scale is spot-on and accurate. This is an essential layout tool for contractors and those homeowners who have competent carpentry skills.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better Than its Predecessor, August 2, 2009

This review is from: Starrett CP505A-12 ProSite Combination Protractor (Tools & Home Improvement)
I owned the previous Starrett version of the protractor, and while an excellent product, it was not dead accurate. The angular marks on the dial were engraved on a decal which, unfortunately, was not applied with precision. The angular marks on this tool, however, are applied by laser and are dead nuts on. This tool will save you time, material (i.e., money) and , most importantly, aggravation. It is a very cool tool with roof pitch info and a crown molding table. All index marks on this tool are applied with a laser. The reason I give it a 4 of 5 is, unlike its predecessor, it does not come with a leather carrying case (must buy it as an accessory). If I could give it 4 1/2 stars, I would. Otherwise this tool is a thing of beauty.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great protractor, March 2, 2009

I purchased this, along with the 7" model, to install Wainscot and crown in a bedroom that we are renovating. This is a must-have tool to compliment your power miter saw. This version (ProSite model) is all aluminum construction, with a laser engraved scale, and is far superior to the lesser quality versions. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Laser engraved, or same old decals?, February 3, 2010

This review is from: Starrett CP505A-12 ProSite Combination Protractor (Tools & Home Improvement)
I recently purchased and just received the Starrett CP505A-12 protractor. I heard poor reviews (online and from coworkers) about the less expensive models (505A-12 & 505A-7) regarding accuracy (mainly that they weren't accurate due to the gauge decals being out of alignment from the factory). I spent extra for the CP version because it has good reviews and is claimed to be laser etched/engraved. Looking at the gauges it appears that, although maybe engraved, they're still simply decals stuck onto the aluminum body, unless the aluminum underneath the decal is engraved, but I'm not going to peel back the decal and ruin the $85 tool just to find out. I guess my point is that I feel a little disappointed after paying a premium and then finding that it appears the metal is not engraved, just the decal, which could peel or become misaligned. Are my concerns warranted? I probably wouldn't have bought it if only the decals were etched and not the body itself. Otherwise, it appears to be well built and the graduations do line up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Contractor's Review of the Starrett 5-in-1 tool, July 11, 2009
This review is from: Starrett CP505A-12 ProSite Combination Protractor (Tools & Home Improvement)
I bought the Starrett angle finder online a year or so ago and use it daily, bi-daily. As the other reviews state the tool is very acurate. I use it to find roof pitch, copy angles, find complimentary angles, and to find mitre angles. When I started working at the company my co-workers would go back and forth from the saw to tweak their cuts to get them right while I did them once, now everyone uses it. The tool is also very sturdy, made of solid aluminum and can be dropped off a roof if needed. One of the best carpentry tools I own and expect it to last forever.

If you are buying brand, this tool in no way resembles the quality machinists tools produced by Starrett in the past. I did email Starrett, but sadly got no response. Amazon has been great, they promptly exchanged the item for a replacement. The new one is just as bad, so I gave up.

This is an excellent tool in both function and quality. I just trimmed out three offices with many different angled walls. It saved me several hours of time and frustration in determining the proper angles.

I bought this protractor to assist with the installation of Crown and Floor Moulding.
It's great for making sure the measurements are correct. The tool is expensive but worth the money because I am not wasting the wood I did prior to purchasing the protractor.
I recommend this tool for anyone installing moulding. It is accurate and very well built.

5.0 out of 5 stars its true, April 27, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Starrett CP505A-12 ProSite Combination Protractor (Tools & Home Improvement)
This Starrett COMBO Protractor is what it says it is. Everyone's only and very valid concern is the ACCURACY of the product,... 'cause ACCURACY is ONLY what we are willing to spend money on, and ACCURACY is what we're expecting. There's no point in saying anything more than I got the protractor in the mail shipped well without a scratch. I tested it,... and it was indeed ACCURATE. So chalk up one more for the ACCURATE and satisfied group. I hope yours reads true as well. I would be really bummed out if mine were off, and probably have to write three hundred letters to Starrett to complain. Lucky for them its a good product.
