Product Description

Size: Inquiries - by email

The Starrett 117C center punch with round shank is 4" long and has a 1/8" (3 mm) diameter tapered point. The punch is made from hardened and tempered steel, which provides wear resistance and strength. The round shank is knurled for grip.

Center punches make small dimple marks in a workpiece to help guide a drill bit. Manual center punches have a metal shank with a point and are typically tapped with a ball-peen hammer to mark the material. Automatic center punches have an internal spring mechanism that enables them to mark the material without using a hammer, leaving one hand free for steadying the work.

The L.S. Starrett Company manufactures precision measuring tools, metrology and testing equipment, and saw blade products. The company, founded in 1880, is headquartered in Athol, MA.

Instead of buying a set of punches of which many I will probably never use I choose to buy only the ones I will need for my AR builds. Starett is a very good brand to have in your toolbox. Stay away from the cheap junk! A good start are sizes 5/32 tapered point, 5/32 drive pin, 3/32 tapered point, 3/32 drive pin, 1/8 tapered point, and 1/8 drive pin. I believe I'm missing one for the pin on the barrel gas block. But I'm not an expert by no means. The sizes above are a pretty good start. Happy building!

Really the only thing disappointing about this tool is knowing one of the finest tools you own is something you smack with a hammer. The level of quality is even beyond what you would expect from an in-house Starrett product, and my expectations. For about the price of some piece of garbage at a big box store you get a piece of real tool steel (S2) that was knurled and turned down, roll marked, heat treated (60 Rockwell C), blued and then centerless ground. Yes, that's right, they ground off the metal upset by the roll mark while leaving the bluing in the letters. Who even does that anymore??

Very nice punch. The knurling on it feels perfect. Has a good point that works well as a scribe in addition to normal punch-stuff.

Glad I got the Starrett instead of an off-brand.

Extremely happy with this center punch. I needed a tool that could be used for what it's intended, but also be strong enough to drive out rivets that were drilled out and this does both. Strong materials make this punch stand up to the abuse I put it through without warping or damaging the sharp center point at all.

It even looks good to boot. Only problem I have is the way it was shipped. I almost threw it away with the box as it was in a tiny envelope the same color as the box and on the bottom of the box as well. Got lucky and saw it as I was getting ready to toss out the box and wondered what it was as it had no indication on it's envelope what it could be. Obviously that's a seller concern and not anything to do with the product, but I thought it worth mentioning in case anyone buys from the same seller.

Its alright for the price you pay. The center punch needs a bit of pressure to mark sheet metal and is small and compact. I didnt seem to have any problems with it and it works out great.

One of the best punches I have ever owned. Perfect for staking castle nuts on your AR. Should last a lifetime.

I bought this punch to help center a drill point on a broken exhaust manifold bolt. It did exactly what it's intended to do. I would definitely recommend this solid tool to anyone.

I was a little skeptical about how well this punch would do on some hardened steel bolts but can say it worked extremely well and I'm glad I bought it.
