Product Description

The Starrett 799A-24/600 dial caliper measures 0 to 24 inches and 0 to 600 mm with 0.0005” or 0.01 mm accuracy. This light, comfortable, and easy-to use measuring tool allows for reliable and accurate readings with the slim, streamlined design and large, easy-to-read LCD.

Lightweight, ergonomic design makes this caliper easy to use, even with one hand. The caliper can be used with one hand through operating the fine adjustment roll with the thumb. A lock screw can hold the slide in position. Depth rod is integrated into the rack of the caliper, unlike many calipers which offer a detachable depth rod, or none at all. The hardened stainless steel body offers corrosion resistance and long life. Single battery is easy to access, on the front of the plastic casing, next to the LCD. The last measurement position is retained when the caliper is shut off, and it is simple to zero the caliper at any position with the clearly marked zero button. Easy-to-read LCD is large, with 0.32” tall characters. The caliper shuts off automatically after five minutes of nonuse. Linear accuracy meets the internationally used Deutsches Institut fur Normung 862: Vernier Calipers Requirements and Testing (DIN 862) standards.

Calipers measure the distance between two opposing sides of an object. They make inside, outside, depth, or step measurements, according to their type. Calipers are commonly used in architecture, metalworking, mechanical engineering, machining, manufacturing, carpentry, and medicine. The simplest calipers have two legs to mark the two points and require a ruler to take the measurement. More complex calipers use two sets of jaws instead of legs and have up to two graduated scales. Vernier, dial, and digital calipers give direct and accurate readings and are functionally identical, having a calibrated scale with a fixed jaw, and another jaw with a movable pointer that slides along the scale. The vernier caliper has a scale sliding parallel to the main scale for an additional, fractional reading to improve measurement precision. The dial caliper has a circular dial with a pointer on a toothed gear rack replacing the second vernier scale. As with the vernier, this second measurement is added to the reading from the main scale to obtain the result. The dial caliper is used also for measuring size differential between two objects. The digital caliper takes the same sort of differential measurements as the dial caliper by zeroing the display at any point along the slide, with an LCD (replacing the dial) that displays a single, easily read value in both English and metric units. Some digital calipers can hold data readings between measurements and send them to data collection devices.

The L. S. Starrett Company was founded in 1880, originally manufacturing bench vises, squares, and other tools. They acquired other companies throughout the years, expanding their services into making precision measurement instruments and tools, such as calipers, micrometers, saw blades, and gauges. Starrett is headquartered in Athol, Massachusetts and has manufacturing facilities in Brazil, the United Kingdom, China, and other locations.

After using Starrett tools for 30 years, I am noticing many of their products are now being produced outside of the US. This 799A-6/150 Caliper says "China" on the bar code. Ironically, I was buying this to replace a harbor freight Centech. This Starrett Caliper has almost an identical design to the $15.00 Centech, and same build quality. If I wanted another China built Caliper, I would have just bought one, and saved more than $80. What I really needed is something better. You would think by paying over a hundred bucks, you would get that.

For what's it's worth, here the review:
Scale: appears to be lexan or something, dark black, hard to read.
LCD: nothing special, I am sure it's clear to read.
Battery, comes with one battery, not installed.
Build Quality: Not bad and typical of other Chinese Calipers, but the depth gauge (the rod that comes out the bottom) is a bit wobbly. The Caliper's sliding action is a bit tight (not smooth). In these two aspects, the Centechs at HF are actually better.
Case: Cheap plastic, hard to open, will likely crack if dropped. For the price the case should be much better. That case is important.

For some reason, the one I received didn't come with a calibration certificate, so I will have to return it.

I have many Starrett tools and have consistently been impressed with the quality and collectibility. This digital caliper, however, is not anything special. For all practical purposes, it is identical to a Centech, which on sale costs less than $10.00. Even the plastic case is virtually identical. Save your money.

I bought this caliper for light use at the office but it never lived up to my expectations. Ignoring all the happy Mitutoyo users at work I decided to try a product from an American company. Unfortunately this is a very cheaply made caliper, out of the box the display plastics appear to be delaminating. After a few months I noticed I had to replace the battery about once a week, it appeared to turn off as designed when stored but for whatever reason it would continue to drain the battery. So again tonight I went to replace the battery and the upright terminal broke off. It looks like the inexpensive surface solder finally fatigued and failed after having the battery replaced time after time.

Sadly this once great brand doesn't produce a quality workhorse 6" digital caliper.

I'll replace this unit with a traditional dial caliper to avoid the battery situation, and it will not be a Starrett. The Swiss made Brown and Sharpe model looks especially attractive. It is more expensive than other brands but the quality looks substantially higher.

Dear Alex,

First, let me apologize for the problems you experienced with your Starrett 799A-6/150 caliper. We would appreciate the opportunity to work with you in an effort to resolve these issues, to your satisfaction.

The tool in the all red case, identified in the picture you posted along with your review, is an older product introduced 5 years ago and discontinued about 3 ½ years ago. It was replaced by the next generation tool including a plastic case with the clear top.

The older products had a protective clear film covering the lens that can be removed at any time. Removal of that protective film should resolve the lamination concern you mentioned. Our quality team acknowledged that the film on the earlier lens was difficult to remove and that this has been corrected with the next generation tool.

I'm not sure when you purchased this tool but it is possible that it sat on a distributors shelf for some time. Batteries do have a shelf life and that could have contributed to your battery issues. Battery life for the current generation tool is 1 year and the terminals will not break.

If you contact our customer service team at (843) 746-3578 and ask for Bill, I will gladly work to resolve your concerns.

Kindest Regards,
Starrett Customer Support - Bill

I own a variety of Starrett tools, micrometers and both dial and digital calipers. All are quality, US-made tools.

This is not. It is made in China, and appears almost identical to other Chinese made tools sold for far less money. It bears no resemblance to my US-made Starrett tools, including my personal set of Starrett digital calipers.

Anyone who has ever owned dial calipers knows that you keep them in their storage case to carry them around. With my old Starrett or Mitotuyo calipers, I can put them in their case and carry them in my bag.

Not with this one. The case is not a storage case, but a display case, like you would get with cheap jewelery. There is 15mm of free space in the clear bubble lid, enough room for the calipers to rattle around and scratch the styrene. I have to stuff some bubble wrap in the lid every time I close the case to keep them from falling out. Whoever designed this case has never owned a set of calipers.

The first set I purchased arrived with the crummy case shattered in the sealed package, so I had to send it back and get another. I wish I had pulled out the calipers and looked at them first, so I could have sent them back and purchased the Mitutoyo. Less money, better tool.

I love fine tools, but I will never buy Starrett again. I could have gone down to Harbor Freight or Radio Shack and purchased the same cheap tool for far less money. I'm quite thankful that I purchased this for work, rather than for home.

You're literally paying $90 for the name here. This is a $30 caliper selling for $120. If you can find an old US-made Starrett, I would still buy it.

If you're thinking of buying this tool, I strongly suggest the Mitutoyo. I wish I had purchased it instead.

I own a lot of Starrett tools, mostly micrometers and indicators and I have always been happy enough with their quality to pay a little extra over the other 'better' brands (Mitutoyo, B&S).

I also own a few 'horbor freight' tools, including a set of throw-away electronic calipers that I keep out in the shop (as opposed to he nices tools I keep in the tool chest), so I'm not a hater by any means, I believe as long as you get what you pay for, you shouldn't complain. So what if those $14.00 calipers are thin, poorly machined, have somewhat coarse movement, and run through batterias about monthly...they were $14 and if they fall behind a machine tomorrow and I never see them again, no big deal.

Now for these Starrett calipers... When I opened the box I immediately saw a difference in quality from what I have come to expect form better machinists tools. The 'grain' of the metal looked more like the 'belt sander' finish of the horbor freight tools than the satin chrome and finely machined tools I expected.

Upon closer examination... they are EXACTLY the same as the cheapie HF calipers! I mean EXACTLY!
The steel beam is .125 thick - just like the HF caliper... my older Starrett dial calipers are .186
The feel is less substantial than my old dial calipers - exactly the same as the cheapies.
The motion is coarse, imprecise... just like the cheapies and NOTHING like other calipers I've owned
The contour of the calipers - identical.
The cheap little retaining screw on the back - identical.
The poor-feel thumb roll - identical.
The only difference is the button arrangement and the battery door, and of course the STARRETT stickers.

I don't mind getting mediocre quality if I pay mediocre prices. I know you get what you pay for.
