Product Description

The Starrett S565PC is an eight-piece steel drive pin punch set that is used to drive pins into or out of a workpiece. The set includes pin punches with the following diameters: 1/16", 3/32", 1/8", 5/32", 3/16", 7/32", 1/4", and 5/16". Each pin punch is made from hardened, tempered steel and has a knurled finger grip. Each measures 4” in length and has its diameter stamped on the head. The set comes in a protective vinyl case with labeled pockets for organization. Pin punches are used to place or knock out pins and rivets in workpieces, where they are frequently used to attach a part to a rotating shaft. They have a cylindrical body to hold and drive the smaller diameter, flat-ended tip into the workpiece.

The L.S. Starrett Company manufactures precision measuring tools, metrology and testing equipment, and saw blade products. The company was founded in 1880 and is headquartered in Athol, MA.

Please don't laugh (I'm new, but learning fast), but I had never heard of Starrett until last year when I ran across a reference in a product review on another website (something like, "It's no Starrett."). After researching further and not finding one negative comment about Starrett, I decided to invest the extra money in this punch set. No regrets, baby! This is a super high quality set. Nice and solid, with some weight to it. Knurled handles for easy gripping. If you want a cheap no-name (probably Chinese) punch set from someplace like CheaperThanDirt for $10, then fine, more power to you; but as someone having just come from that and ending up frustrated & angry because the dang things bend and break in two when trying to remove a simple pin from a firearm--not to mention scratching the finish when it does--my advice is to save your money, bide your time, and invest wisely in something that'll last a lifetime and do the job. This Starrett set is just the ticket.

Update (2/7/14):
I love this set, and it still gets my highest 5-star recommendation. However, the 1/16" punch has bent/broke on a couple of occasions and required replacement. If I remember correctly, I believe the two culprits were (1) the safety lever pins on the Beretta 92/96 and (2) the sear pin on a Taurus M66 revolver. In both cases, the pins were in very tight (the Taurus pin is staked) and required a good whack to loosen. In any case, it was a minor setback, and no harm done. I now keep spares of the 1/16" punch on hand in case something like this ever happens again. [Ironically, I haven't had a problem since I ordered spares!] This is a great punch set!

these punches are freakin tough. i used them to punch out my Springfield XD sights. anyone thats knows anything about the XDs knows those sight are next to impossible to knock out. i banged on the sights with a hammer and these punches as hard as was possible to get them out. took me about 50 whacks for the front and the rear each. i used the biggest of the 3 smaller ones and it didnt bend at all. these are supper sturdy and the grip area on them works very well. hands down the best punches ive ever used or seen. the price is not too shabby either.

This set, I recently re-bought because I thought that I had lost my old set. My old set is 30 years old, and all 8 peices are still intact and in very good condition. Oh, I bent the 1/16" punch once, but I was rough with it, and straigtened it out to be used another 30 years I hope. All in all, this is one excellent pin punch set.

I bought this set because I assemble several AR-15 lowers a year and needed a quality set that would hold up under hard use. Aside from being made in the USA (remember when we actually made things out of steel in this country?), they are fairly priced for what you get. Yes, they are a bit on the expensive side, but they stand up to the hard hits from the big hammers without chipping or bending. Even when you misuse them as a pry tool (and you know at some point you are going to), say to take spring tension off the hammer in a SKS trigger group, they stand up to the force without any problem. If you are serious about working on guns or anything else for that matter, get this set- you'll never need to buy another and you'll be helping a company that still bothers to make things the right way.

L. S. Starrett, which is located not far from me in Athol, Massachusetts, is still in business in those huge old red brick mill buildings while most of the metalworking industry in the US has been displaced by .. ugh .. China. Starrett makes quality tools and takes pride in their work. These are lovely steel pin punches, precision made. Yes, they cost twice as much as the Chinese version, but worth it. Buy them; you'll feel good about it and you'll use them a long time.

I have this same set in a wooden box that is 35 years old, but over the years the two smaller punches were broken. Bought this set to replenish my original. I was surprised to see the same part # was available as my old punch set, except a plastic pouch instead of wood. I think you can get the same style box as the wooden one, except in plastic.

The punches are tough and seemingly indestructible but the pouch they came in had a huge hole in the bottom of it requiring me to tape it up to keep the punches from falling out of the red pouch that they sit in....

Now, I am a new AR owner...I've been a pistol guy for 15 years though...SO when I took the plunge and picked up my first AR I had a chance (10 days, sighs Ca laws) to search for some furniture and tools for my new mistress. Well, there is a plethora of choices when it comes to roll pin punches... I was going to go the El-Cheapo route and buy the 11 buck ones, but I figured I wanted something that will last me. After doing some research I found that this company makes superior products... It was either this set or their brass set for 8 bucks more... I saved the 8 bucks and picked up this set. I am very happy, high quality metal, superior grip, nice weight to them... They feel expensive and perform like they should and thats what I wanted. I am very happy with my purchase. If you're on the fence like I was, please if you have the money buy the quality set over the cheap 11 buck one. If not I will be reading YOUR reviews about how you bent and broke your punches.
