A Collection of Excellent B-Sides,

The marvellous Carter were one of the seminal British bands of the 90s, combining lyrics that were creative, vitriolic and witty, excellent punk riffs and flawless synthesized drum beats. In this collection, the manic duo Jim Bob and Fruibat have gathered together B-Sides from such singles as 'Sherriff Fatman' (an attack on corrupt landlords), 'Bloodsport For All' (about abuse in the armed forces) and 'Lenny and Terrence' (a comment on the pop composings of Lenny Kravitz and Terence Trent d'Arby), yet never does the quality of the collection show any dip from first-rate work. Indeed, most of the songs on this CD would, in my opinion, warrant single releases of their own. The songs range in content and style from the huge assault on the royal family, 'Stuff the Jubilee', in which Carter are their wise-cracking, angered best, to the sentimental 'Always The Bridemaid, Never The Bride' in which the bands softer side is revealed. While, of course, the album would be a pointless purchase for those who already have all the singles, such those new to the Carter USM experience would surely benefit from having this in their collection. It makes you wonder how the Spice Girls ever became succesful, never mind famous... |
