Stars of Eurovision - essential for all Euro fans,
By nigel.morgan@sihe.ac.uk (Swansea) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Stars of Eurovision (Audio CD)
This CD features a rather eclectic selection of songs and in reverse chronological order aims to provide a taster of 5 decades of Eurovision. It makes intriguing listening in that it illustrates how the style and musical diversity of the entries have changed over the years. Beginning with the winning Diva (Israel 1998) and closing with some incredibly obscure entries from the 1950s you will find the choice of tracks sometimes inspired, often bizarre and sometimes predictable (a good selection of classic winners is included such as Ding-a-Dong (Netherlands 1975) and Paupee de Circe Poupee De (France 1965). However the real merit of this collection is the inclusion of many entries which just failed to make first place but really deserved to have won. In particular the spine tinglingly haunting I Treni di Tozeur (Italy 1984) and Amita's 'Le Dernier Qui a Parte' (France 1991). This latter song very narrowly lost when at the end of some nail-biting voting it scored the same number of points as Carola's Fangad av im Stormvind (Sweden) which was unfortunately declared the winner on a voting technicality. A pity as this blend of Indian wailing and accordian sounds is one of the most memorable and highly original entries ever to appear in the Contest and is worth the price on the Disc alone. Another treasure is Apres Toi (Luxembourg 1972) which is here featured most unusually in a German language version. All in all this disc invaluably complements other available collections (such as 'This is Eurovision')which include more of the mainstream/popular entries.

Hi, My name is Liron Dorfman and I would like to tell you how great is the "Stars of Eurovision" CD. The producers of the CD picked 32 of the best songs ever competed in the Eurovision song contest though not all of them got to the first place. This choice is a really good one 'cause each year there are many good songs, but only one in the first place. People many times forget the "other" good songs and this is a terrific time to hear them again. Two wise things that were taken into consideration while producing the CD were the "representation" of many countries, and putting some songs that are not in English but became big hits (something which is pretty rare nowadays). Among them you can find "Diva" (Israel 98), "1,2,3" (France 76),"Paupee De Cire, Pouppee De Son" (Luxembourg 65) and "Halleluja" (Israel 79) - songs we all love. Well, this is great collection indeed - new songs together with old ones, in English and in other languages - a gift for every Eurovision fan. Last thing, I believe that while selling it, "Amazon.com" is making a great service to this great work called "The Eurovision Song Contest". Now, people outside of Europe can hear these songs too... as many times said, this planet is after all actually only a small village.

The best moments...,
This review is from: Stars of Eurovision (Audio CD)
While The 'Eurovision Song Contest' is viewed for laughs nowadays, this compilation covers some of the most memorable and loved songs from the past four decades. Note that not all songs on the album won in the contest. The selection is great and the songs first rate!Recommended (as one of the reviewers below wrote) to all Euro Fans.

This was my first internet purchase, and boy was it worth it! "Stars of Eurovision" is totally brilliant and has peaked my interest in the singers who disappeared into obscurity after achieving a "one-hit-wonder". There are some real gems here. Most of it is really cheesy, but if you love this type of Euro-pop, you'll love it as much as I do. My favorite songs are "Ding a Dong" and "Making Your Mind Up" as well as "Poupee de Cire, Poupee de son". There are too many more to mention.

Parlez vous ... Eurovision?,

Probably the most interesting Eurovision Compilation out there... On this CD you'll find plenty of hits along with some hidden Gems, and some less known Classics. Watch out for the rare Alternate Version of 'I Treni di tozeur' performed only by Alice, Vicki Leandros' German rendition of 'Apres Toi' & the unforgettable 'Little Child' for the 1st time made available on CD. All tracks sound great, unlike some other Eurovision Compilations.
