Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Applique d flowers are fresh and new when the flowers dance around a central star. Careful instructions on creating a background that can range from dramatic darks to tranquil pastels are sure to show off the flowers to their best advantage. Colored plates abound, and traceable patterns for 12 blocks are included in both 20-inch and 8-inch sizes. Tips are given throughout the text; results incorporate plaids, stripes, and bright colors on the pastel backgrounds. Whether creating an iris, clematis, dogwood, or daisy for a sampler or a full-size quilt, today's eager quilters will be well guided by these practical lessons. Even a beginner can produce excellent work. Iva Freeman

More About the Author

I was born and raised in Oklahoma City. My husband, Steve, and I met at the University of Oklahoma. We married in 1978, at the end of our senior year at OU when we each completed our degrees, mine in interior design and his in zoology. He went on to obtain a Ph.D. in Zoology at Arizona State University. His career has taken us to Tempe, AZ, Tulsa, OK, and most recently to Sherman, TX, where he is currently chair of the Biology Department. Luckily, I can make quilts anywhere!

Our boys, Chris and Jeff, were born while Steve was in graduate school. I discovered quilting when the boys were young and needed comforters for their bunk beds. I have not put my needle down since!

I met Linda Jenkins, my partner in Piece O' Cake Designs, not long after I started quilting at a meeting of the Green Country Quilters' Guild in Tulsa. We've been friends ever since. We started Piece O' Cake in 1994. I could not ask for a better partner.

Making quilts is interesting, fulfilling, and challenging. Running the business with Linda is exhilarating. Although not what I thought I would be doing with my life when I graduated from college, this is so much better!

Our son, Chris, married Lorna in 2001. They presented us with our first grandchild, Elanor Cecelia, November 6, 2002 and John Patrick Kelly "Jack" Goldsmith was born October 24, 2007. Being a "Nana" is truly wonderful.

Jeff married Celia in the summer of 2009. I am blessed - I have two daughter-in-laws that I both love and respect. Life it good!

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to follow, June 21, 2000
This review is from: Stars in the Garden: Fresh Flowers in Applique (Paperback)
They keep this book simple and to the point. They cover what you need to create two different quilts shown in the book. The directions are easy to follow and they have the patterns in the book for you to cut or copy and use. I highly recommend this book for someone interested in trying applique.

I love Piece o' Cake and this is my favorite book. I had to buy it after checking it out at the library. Lots and lots of color photographs, full size patterns and detailed instructions on the Piece o' Cake applique method are included. I've used these flower patterns over and over again on things other than quilts, also.

1.0 out of 5 stars Paid and never received. Only got 1 star because wouldn't let me send this., January 6, 2009
This review is from: Stars in the Garden: Fresh Flowers in Applique (Paperback)
We have never received the product. The frustrating thing is no where to turn to for help. I emailed the seller with no success. Tried to contact Amazon, no success there either. So, I contacted American Express since it was charged on their card and they are investigating. So, it may well be the last time we order from Amazon. Bad experience.
