I would have to say my gut response on this book was that it skimmed the surface. This made for a pleasant trip, but not one that is truly memorable or thought-provoking.

This was a polished piece of work as far as spelling, grammar, and punctuation, which I appreciate very much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chick-Lit for the smart chick, August 29, 2011
This review is from: Rock Star's Girl (A Hollywood Dating Story) (Kindle Edition)
Novelist J.F. Kristin and I have been friends since elementary school, and attended both high school and university together. Our friendship may be the reason I picked up "Rock Star's Girl," but it's not the reason I kept reading.

I had long since given up reading Chick-Lit, finding myself frustrated by the sheer stupidity of the characters in many popular novels of this genre (the Shopaholic series by Sophie Kinsella comes immediately to mind). But Kristin's protagonist, Emily Watts, is no idiot. She's an educated, intelligent, and witty woman -- just like the author herself. Sure, Emily makes a few dumb moves in the game of love, but in the end her braininess takes the win.

"Rock Star's Girl" is a compelling, entertaining and amusing read. If you're in the mood for some light-hearted romance with a smart and savvy edge, I encourage you to pick it up. But be forewarned -- it's difficult to put down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, relatable and surprising, November 9, 2011
This review is from: Rock Star's Girl (Paperback)
Fun, relatable and surprising. I don't read chick lit often, so to capture my interest in this genre I have to be pulled in right away. Finally, we have a female protagonist (Emily Watts) who isn't lost, ditzy or dying for a man. Emily Watts is who I want to meet when I read chick lit - she's smart, focused and sarcastically funny.

The pop culture references incorporated by the author make the reading fun, relevant and light. It's visually very descriptive. I felt like I was following along the way in LA street by street and venue by venue. There are some great plot twists that I didn't see coming and felt totally satisfied at the end of this read.

I highly recommend this book for those who like chick lit and those who read it on the fringe. It's like a little candy for the brain.

I really enjoyed this book. It was interesting to read a story where the main character is 26 years old.

This book has that young adult feel, but is set around adult characters. They have jobs, responsabilities and their judgement is not clouded by their teenage hormones.

Emily Watts is a lovable character. She's a strong woman who has a head on her shoulder. I felt like she could've been one of my friend.

The love interest is everything you'd want but with a touch of reality, meaning that he is far from perfect. Something that is often missing in books. Aren't we tired of always reading about the perfect guy who says the perfect thing, who does the perfect thing, who looks perfect... Thank you J.F. Kristin for that touch of reality.

The ending surprised me, but I liked it. It's not what you'd usually expect and it was refreshing.

It's definitely worth a read. If only for it's entertainement value. Plus, if you're like me and you love storylines that involve Hollywood, celebrities, rock stars and actors you'll enjoy this book.

Best of all, it's only 0.99$ !!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable read!, October 18, 2011

I really enjoyed this story about a "normal" girl whose life turns completely upside down when she starts dating a celebrity and, according to the gossip columns, two celebrities! The main character, Emily, was extremely easy to like as she was very down-to-earth and stable and not someone you tend to see on the cover of gossip magazines. I liked that she was vulnerable enough to let herself fall for the wrong guys and become distracted from her work yet, strong enough to know when it was time to move on. Although some of the credit for that should go to her BFF Shelby.) I also completely related to her relationships with both love interests. I've wasted more time than I like to admit on charming guys like Jesse who don't want to commit to you but never completely shut the door and therefore keep you hanging on the "maybe". And I've also dated guys like Cory who seem too good to be true and, just like Cory, turn out to be not so good!

All in all, a very entertaining read. The one question I had throughout the book was how far Emily and Jesse's "friendship" had gone in the past. Was it strictly friendship or had they been "friends with benefits" at one point? The book was very PG and so I had no idea how physical any of the relationships ever got. It did not distract from my enjoyment of the story but I did wonder!

4.0 out of 5 stars Rock Star's Girl, September 20, 2011
This review is from: Rock Star's Girl (A Hollywood Dating Story) (Kindle Edition)
Emily Watts is an over-worked yet still struggling writer who tries to keep a social life with her workaholic schedule. While taking a break from her fashion website, Emily attends a concert for her friend Jesse Cinder, a struggling musician searching for his big break. Emily has been friends with Jesse for years, but is wondering if maybe they shouldn't be more. When Jesse turns her down, Emily feels humiliated- but quickly rebounds when she meets Cory Sampson, who is the lead singer in a popular band. Before Emily knows what is happening, her name and photo is being splashed along all the gossip magazines, and what she is wearing and all aspects of her life are being dissected and criticized on celebrity websites. But Emily doesn't want to be famous, doesn't want her life being talked about on the news. She just wants to meet The One and be a writer. Can she handle the pressures of dating a celebrity? And how will she handle Jesse when he suddenly wants her- as more than a friend?

Rock Star's Girl is an addicting story about the pitfalls that come with being a celebrity. I loved the angle of Emily- a normal girl who simply isn't interested in all the brouhaha of being famous. She has her morals, her friends, and a hopefully thriving career in something she is interested in. This book read like a gossip magazine, where I had to keep flipping the pages to find out what was truth and what was exaggerated. There were plenty of twists that kept me interested, and I never knew which way the story was going to end. I have to say, the ending is a great one. No spoilers- but I enjoy reading a not so typical ending every once in awhile. It has kept me guessing what Emily is up to. A fun story that chick lit fans will want to check out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book! Very enjoyable. Read it in one sitting, August 26, 2011
This review is from: Rock Star's Girl (A Hollywood Dating Story) (Kindle Edition)
Great book! Very enjoyable. Read it in one sitting flying from SLC to MEM.

The female perspective was very educational for me. I liked the characters, and the details made me feel like I've dated in LA!

Never heard the word GUITARDED before. I'm stealing that one.

And I want to know HOW much of the book was real and WHO the muso was.

I would have to say my gut response on this book was that it skimmed the surface. This made for a pleasant trip, but not one that is truly memorable or thought-provoking.

This was a polished piece of work as far as spelling, grammar, and punctuation, which I appreciate very much.

Two main things I noted:
There were several scenes where Emily is described as neglecting her work, and it seemed inconsistent with what is presented of her character. I realize that this may have been a conscious choice to show how her life had changed, but to me, it didn't fit, especially in light of a conversation that appears rather late in the book. It also made me feel very irritated with her (although that may say more about my personality than anything).

The ending also disappointed me somewhat. It seemed unbalanced, and I am not going to say more than that because I don't want to spoil the book for anyone else.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun book, good not great, December 4, 2011
By
This review is from: Rock Star's Girl (Paperback)

Summary: Emily Watts, 26 year old freelance writer and fashion website owner, just wants to have a fun night out at her friend Jesse's concert. Instead, she meets rockstar, Cory Sampson, and after agreeing to go out on a date with him, makes entertainment headlines. Soon, Emily is famous, just for dating a rockstar, and does not enjoy being thrust into the limelight. When rumors erupt that she's been cheating on Cory with Jesse, she's not ready to face the kickback from Cory's fans, who publicly call her out, call her names, and grow to hate her. Now her career is going down the drain as fast as her love life. Is either man right for her, or is she being used as a career booster for one or both of the guys? Can she save her own career and her reputation before it's too late?

My Thoughts: Insider stories are always fun and interesting to me. This story takes place in the L.A. music scene and I enjoyed the inside glimpse not only of the music scene, but also that of celebrity life and tabloid entertainment writing. Emily lives in a dog eat dog world where people will do anything to get the story or to find fame and things get vicious fast. I liked Emily's character a lot, and how she was an independent, self-made woman who followed her dream. She was shocked by her sudden fame and didn't know how to deal with it, or the pitfalls of her relationship(s). I particularly liked the articles that appeared throughout the book with gossip about Emily and her romance. The love triangle was interesting as well and I honestly didn't know who she would or would not end up with. Jesse was a bit hard to like, but Cory was more likable, though it was hard to know whether or not he was genuine. In Emily's Hollywood world, it's hard to tell the fake from the real. All in all, I thought this was a pretty fun read. While it isn't incredibly thought provoking, it's a good choice for a light, escapist read. It moved a little slowly for me, but I liked the story and would definitely read something from J.F. Kristin again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Engaging Chick Lit Tale (B+ Grade), February 20, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Rock Star's Girl (A Hollywood Dating Story) (Kindle Edition)
I had some doubts about this one because I'll be honest, most of the self-published books that are free for a limited time on Kindle are horrible. That's not the case with Rock Star's Girl. I really enjoyed this Tinseltown, chick-lit book with Emily, a blogger and freelance writer who gets caught in the middle of an up coming rockstar's manipulations of the paparazzi to make him look good.

Poor Emily doesn't want to be noticed that way or be the next It Girl. She wants to stay under the radar but can't because after a few dates with Cory the rockstar boy who at first treats her like a princess, she's under the limelight and it's not all roses for her. Then there's Jesse, her friend of four years who she likes and would like to be in a relationship with, but he gives her major mixed signals. Jesse is also an up and coming rockstar who uses Emily for support and emotional stability. He pretty much strings Emily along, knowing she wants more from him.

I found the writing to be engaging and Emily wonderful. I'd love to see a sequel or perhaps a series featuring Emily. I also would like to see Jesse again, even though he doesn't seem to be the best person for Emily to have in her life. I didn't think he was that bad, but more clueless than anything.

This is one self-published book I would recommend to those who enjoy chick-lit, the celebrity scene and a female protagonist we can all sympathize with.

5.0 out of 5 stars what a twist, February 20, 2012
This review is from: Rock Star's Girl (A Hollywood Dating Story) (Kindle Edition)
I am not going into details in the story as there is nothing to add to what other people already said without givng to much away. But I would like to say, that I really enjoyed reading this book. It is not the typical love story and the twist in this story at the end is just nicely done. I think every reader has a preference to the end of the love triangle and some might think it unfinished, for me it was just brilliantly done. My respect to the author as this is one of a few books where I did not guess the end of the story. I know this is not the last book I will read of J.F. Kristin.
