Review

“When we consider the remarkable achievements of Khenpo Tsültrim Gyamtso Rinpoche and his contribution to the Dharma, he is, without doubt, one of the great guides of our time.”—The Seventeenth Gyalwang Karmapa

“A single word from a truly accomplished guru like Khenpo Rinpoche is worth a thousand pictures. These teachings will make an indelible imprint of nondual wisdom in the reader’s mind that no ‘delete button’ of dualistic consciousness can undo.”—Dzogchen Ponlop, author of Wild Awakening and Mind Beyond Death

"These teachings show us how the Buddhist path of view, meditation, and conduct can be practiced every day, all day, anywhere and everywhere. This book will instruct, delight, and inspire all who read it.”—Elizabeth Callahan, translator of Jamgön Kongtrul’s Treasury of Knowledge: Frameworks of Buddhist Philosophy

Among the many different presentations of the Buddhist tradition that are available today, the teachings of Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso are unique. A consummate scholar, Khenpo Rinpoche is known for having achieved high realization through traditional tantric yogic practices. Perhaps for this reason, Khenpo Tsultrim`s teachings go straight to the heart of Buddhist philosophy. They offer students a simple, joyful method of Dharma practice that fully engages one's body, speech and mind in every moment.

For those new to the dharma, this book presents the essence of Buddhism simply and directly. For those with some familiarity with Buddhist philosophy, and who may be confused by the different perspectives, this book shows clearly how all the Buddhist philosophical schools lead to the same ultimate reality. And for advanced practitioners who have already received pointing out instructions from their gurus, this book offers joyful, pithy advice on practice. Khenpo Tsultrim's teachings are artfully translated and introduced by his heart students, Ari Goldfield and Rose Taylor. Through their efforts and talents, Stars of Wisdom is a delightful book full of philosophical insights, songs and wisdom.

Another wonderful book from Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso Rinpoche, this one accessible to everyone. A sampler focussing on three aspects of Khenpo Rinpoche's teachings --- dharma songs, aspiration prayers, and analysis, this book is full of Rinpoche's creativity, sense of humor, and insightful guidance. Ari Goldfield and Rose Taylor have put this book together with loving care and their usual clear, straightforward translation. This is a book I will keep coming back to again and again to re-experience Rinpoche's kindness in making the teachings come alive in his unique way.

The Buddha taught that the two main sufferings of humans are busyness and poverty (or poverty mentality). I have often heard spiritual practitioners say that they do not have time to practice. And I have often experienced feeling that I lack the resources to help relieve others of their suffering. Stars of Wisdom brilliantly addresses these delusions. Described in this book is the practice of analytical meditation, a profound inquiry for deconstructing concepts of self and the phenomenal world. Included in these concepts are archaic notions of spiritual practice and practitioner, which may lead one to believe there is no time to practice or nothing to give to others.

Stars of Wisdom poetically elucidates that spiritual practice is not confined to a cushion or retreat setting. The three techniques contained within are useful anywhere, at any time. A prayer of aspiration can be made while watching the news. A song of yogic joy can be sung in the shower. Analytical meditation can be used to deconstruct concepts while on a train to work. In this way, "mundane" experiences become the spiritual path.

Stars of Wisdom is a true gem.

It's wonderful to read Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso's instructions for experiencing difficulties in a different way - with openness and savoir faire, that come from the knowledge discovered for ourselves by contemplating the nature of things. And the teachings on songs and aspiration prayers give ways to experience our heart's compassion and joy. The presentation of the synergy of joyous song, prayer and rigorous intellectual inquiry is unique.
