Book Description

Nancy Elizabeth Wallace continues to explore difficult topics while making them more accessible to young readers with her signature cut-paper illustrations and, in this book, photographs from NASA. Minna is a stargazer. She looks at the nighttime sky and wonders, What are stars? Minna's friends wonder about stars too. How far away are they? Are they really shaped like stars? Is the sun a star? At the Children's Museum, Minna and her friends visit STAR SPACE. The children learn . . . and wonder . . . learn . . . and wonder. Then they go outside and stargaze! Recipes for star-shaped food and an activity page are included.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 1—Wallace follows the same formula of combining factual information with kid-friendly artwork and upbeat dialogue that she used in Rocks! Rocks! Rocks! (2009) and Shells! Shells! Shells! (2007, both Marshall Cavendish), but without the same success. In this selection, Minna and her friends visit a space exhibit at a local children's museum to learn about stars. The book suffers from an identity crisis because the text is rather advanced for the young audience for whom the adorable cut-paper bunnies and backgrounds will hold appeal. The discussion of what a star is is particularly confusing. Also, the dialogue is somewhat forced, and the humor often falls flat. Furthermore, Wallace seems to stretch to create enough related projects. Stars! does contain some digestible factoids and neat pictures of space for the younger set. However, the conflicted and therefore confusing packaging of a challenging text and simplistic illustrations makes it an additional purchase.—Alyson Low, Fayetteville Public Library, AR END

I didn't love it. It's kinda wordy for a picture book. It's an okay book, but I am glad that I didn't pay full price for it.

More About the Author

I love being out in Nature in all seasons - hiking, camping, star gazing, playing in the snow, gardening, beach combing - looking... listening...touching... being filled with WONDER. Nature is where many of the ideas for books come from. I love doing research and having those - WOW! I didn't know that - moments. I also paint seascapes... and love going to art museums. Guess which of my books that inspired! I write and illustrate books about what I love to do and what I care about. I love sharing with children and adults, my writing process, how I create my artwork and sharing what I have learned about visual literacy. Happy me, lucky me, being a children's book author and illustrator.
