The fun wasn't in the puzzles..., January 5, 2000
This review is from: Starship Titanic: First Class Cruise kit (CD-ROM)
Usually when people play adventure games they do it partially because they enjoy solving puzzles. In this game the puzzles seemed to only be a small part of the enjoyment. It was more fun to play with the message delivery system, tease the parrot, and vandalize the ship... the puzzles were simply a means to do more of this. If you are a fan of both Douglas Adams and Monty Pyton you will love this game, otherwise some of the jokes might be lost upon you. The novel that comes with the game is a big plus, as it explains things a bit better. Game play wise the interface is clean and has a unique feature that allows you to actually type in dialogue that you'd like to 'say' to the other characters instead of selecting phrases like to many other adventure games. There were times when it was somewhat tedious to run from one end of the ship to another, but that tends to be a given for any adventure game these days. If I were to voice any great complaint, it was that in the end I didn't feel as though I'd accomplished all that much and kept wondering where the rest of the game had gone. I think more time was spent on making the game LOOK neat instead of making it a deep and interesting adventure. It has some really hilarious moments (the parrot is great!) but not all that much more.

And now, for something completely titanic..., May 28, 2000
This review is from: Starship Titanic: First Class Cruise kit (CD-ROM)
Starship Titanic is not based on Hitchhiker's Guide, but is very similiar in style. The game is very good, but can be difficult at times. However, unlike most games where dialogue is just something to proceed the plot, in this game it is actually a funny and entertaining diversion thanks to the great dialogue engine and voice acting. Between the funny, but annoying parrot and the Elevator attendant who constantly talks about his wartime exploits (what war, we don't know). Buy this game if you want a funny and interesting ride. Also, buy the book to learn about the story.

Well, he knows how to write good books, May 17, 2000
This review is from: Starship Titanic: First Class Cruise kit (CD-ROM)
The game was quite a bit of a letdown, as I am a big fan of Douglas Adams. Unfortunately, the game is not all that fun as a game. I felt even let down in the humor (or should I say humour) department as well. It did not seem as though Mr. Adams had full control over the project, as bits and pieces seemed to be his sense of humor, and other bits seemed to be a watered down Monty Python attempt. The bits that are funny are definitely funny, especially the talking message delivery system things. The look of the environs were astoundingly beautiful, but I feel that it lacked a soul behind it. The game puzzles were at times very easy, and other times astoundingly non-intuitive and difficult. For instance, there is one puzzle that simply does not give you a clue that you are doing the right thing, and you have to do it repeatedly for the game to finally give in and let you have the victory. I won't say what it is, but it involves someone's butt. Overall, the humor was what kept this from getting a one star review, but even that was a disappointment.
