2.0 out of 5 stars It's more about flight school than actually flying an airplane., September 14, 2010
This review is from: Start Flying! DVD: Understand What's Involved with Learning to Fly and Earning a Pilot's License (DVD)
This video is not actually about flying itself. It's about the basics of flight school.

Narrated by Matt Dragon, right off the bat he's talking about all the stuff a new flight student will have to buy. Then he covers the introductory flight, the physical checkup that all flight students must go through, the private pilot's license, the FAA test and the possibility of going further and getting an instrument rating or a multi-engine rating.

They managed to find one of the world's most boring men to discuss the physical and the eye exam. And there are no students saying - I've been studying and flying for 10 months now and it's awesome! No, there's none of that.

The DVD: There are only 7 chapters and no menu. There are no extras.

The presenter: Matt has a splendid speaking voice, but he's obviously reading a script. With public speaking, the best way to go is to sound natural.

My Summary: For people who are interested in learning to fly airplanes, this video is worth watching. However, it will not teach you what the various controls of an airplane do, takeoffs and landings, flying in stormy weather, how to use a radio or anything practical. (I checked it out from my local library.)

I recommend: I just finished reading How To Fly: The Pilot And His Problems by Lieutenant Barrett Studley. This book was originally published in 1929. I found a version from a local library that was published in 1931. Of course, a lot has changed with airplanes and being a pilot since 1929, but he covers the basics so well. And he talks about the importance of making mistakes, which is very cool! Most people don't appreciate that making mistakes is how we learn. And he wrote that some people just don't have the personality to be a pilot.

If you're considering flight school or joining a branch of the military and training as a pilot, read this book first! It will help you decide what to do next.

You won't find insight like this in any modern book about learning to fly. It is well worth your time. And you have to admit, Studley is a great name for a pilot! - Hi there! I'm Lieutenant Studley!

I also recommend a video entitled Carrier. It's about life on a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier. You'll see everyday life with people in the Navy. (There is a fair amount of swearing in the video, so you are forewarned.)

Happy Trails!
