Book Description

Start a Freedom Business is a collection of practical tips and information by serial entrepreneur and full time traveler, Colin Wright.

This book is intended to help aspiring entrepreneurs build businesses that they can be proud of and profit from, while also avoiding the startup trap that many young business people fall prey to, which leads them to exchange a good portion of their lives (a very finite resource) for more money (something that can be earned without that horrible tradeoff).

Chapters cover:

What a Freedom Business is, how to start one, and why you would want to.
The perspective shift that will allow you to reach your ideal lifestyle faster.
Why work-life balance is not what you should be aiming for.
How to focus on value instead of money, so you can reclaim more of both.
The 'All or Nothing' principle.
A vast array of basic business concepts.
Coverage of many different Freedom Business models.
Interviews with successful entrepreneurs who have build their businesses with personal freedoms and their ideal lifestyles in mind.

...and more!

About the Author

Colin Wright is the author, entrepreneur, and full-time traveler behind the blog ExileLifestyle.com, where he writes for an audience of nearly 2 million readers, on topics ranging from philosophy to publishing, long-term travel to all-in entrepreneurship. He also speaks and teaches workshops internationally, generally on work/lifestyle-balance, the business of being a creative person, branding, modern publishing, and how to do what you love for for a living.

At 24, Colin was running a successful branding studio in Los Angeles and living the 'American Dream,' when he decided that dream wasn't all it was cracked up to be. After scaling down his business and getting rid of everything he owned that wouldn't fit into a carry-on bag, he hit the road and began a lifestyle focused on new experiences and novel perspectives. For over four years, he's moved to a new country every four months based on the votes of his readers.

Colin has been featured in an interviewed by hundreds of TV shows, magazines, newspapers, podcasts, blogs, and other media around the world. He's written both fiction and nonfiction bestsellers, and is probably one of the biggest book geeks you'll ever meet.

3.0 out of 5 stars Too basic for me, but great value January 11, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This guide isn't necessarily about freedom businesses - it's about a mixture of location independence and digital entrepreneurship. I feel like he led in with the benefits of the freelance business, but the rest of the guide just focused on business issues and skills rather than a connected strategy.

That's fine. This book is FANTASTIC value for those who buy it. I read a lot about social media, and marketing, and not many books have cover all the topics that these do. Most of the similar ones I've read are, frankly, crap. The only one that is similar to this in quality is Serena Star leonards book called 'How To Retire in 12 months'. That is more expensive, but is also a lot more in depth.

I feel like this guide is perfect for those who want a primer and may be unfamiliar with many facets of the web industry. Those like myself, who already operate web businesses, will just be skimming it. It's the same information and the same stories.

Those who are thinking about creating a freedom business though will get one of the best values for money. You'll be able to figure out if this is something you want to research further without wasting money or time. Colin links to several good resources and examples so you'll definitely get a solid feel for the subject.

3.0 out of 5 stars A very basic intro to starting a freedom business May 14, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
If you are on a budget and completely new to the idea of running a location independant freedom business, I recommend this book, as it is cheap and gives some great ideas to ponder over ( consulting, blogging, epublishing, etc). However, if you already ARE a blogger, consultant, ebook author, OR have read 4 Hour Workweek, I don't recommend it at it is very basic. It doesn't say help a blogger take their platform to the next level in order to get more traffic and money. It doesn't help the consultant market his/her services to find more paying clients. It doesn't help an author do a killer launch. It also doesn't help you really brainstorm a product to create, if you want to go the 4 hr work week way.

I've noticed a trend in remote lifestyle/freedom business blogs and books and that's that authors/bloggers don't really go in depth as to how they get their audience/clients/customers. If you want help with growing your platform and marketing ( which at some point you will need help with, IF you want to make an income) I would read Seth Godin's books, as well as Unmarketing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A $0.99 Gem of an e-book January 20, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Here's a $0.99 gem of an e-book for anyone who has ever considered leaving their day job.

I bought and finished the book earlier this week. Honestly, it was one of the most inspiring things I've read in months.

The book covers the big questions I had about entering the entrepreneurial space. Without diving too deep into complexities, Colin enriches what you've likely suspected and provides challenges for you to start taking action in your own life.

Filled with excellent references for further reading, this book may be just the kick you need to get yourself going with your own freedom business ideas.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Primer and Source of Inspiration January 16, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Colin's latest work, Start a Freedom Business, succeeds in two important ways.

First, it provides a great overview of the Freedom Business concept, including what it is, who it's for, and how it differs from typical entrepreneurship.

Second, it's a terrific source of inspiration. Colin provides a long and detailed list about the different ways you can create income for a Freedom Business, and it's perfect for coming up with ideas. I read this book in one sitting, and afterward I felt energized and ready to get to work. As Colin writes, it's up to you to seize the moment when you're done reading, and the book definitely makes you excited to do so.

For the most part, this is not a step-by-step guide in the sense that you won't have a Freedom Business built by the end of the book, but it will get you thinking and the creative juices flowing.

At $0.99, Start a Freedom business is a tremendous value and a firm, but friendly, push out of the nest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect resource for starting your online business... January 14, 2012
By Alex R.
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
If you are looking at those passive income pages and have no idea where to start based on your own skills, this book will give you a good starting point. It will help you to learn basic concepts about launching an entrepreneur business and get your ideas flowing based on your already existing skills.

You will also learn the story of some of the best online entrepreneurs, which will shine some light into the process of their success. Take the time to read it and for this price tag you will learn so much that it would be ridiculous to not to buy it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very Shallow March 12, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
For what you get - it's too expensive at $0.99. Aside from being poorly written, there's no meat. Must have had his parents write some of those reviews. I guess the one lesson you can draw from it is - in this society we live in - you can sell anything. Really, take a clue from the # of 5-star reviews vs. the total average.

I have read lots of Colin's work. And there is one thing I can always count on. He delivers what he promises, and the added bonus of a great wit is thrown in at no extra charge. In this day and age of people who have an attention span of a gnat, myself included, this book was perfect. It is an easy read, concise, and informative, well formatted.

I think it is the perfect catalyst for the person who is just getting interested and curious about this trend of a location independent business. He lays out the basic concepts, from money streams to ideas to create that business. And for the person that knows he wants to do this, he takes it a step further and includes plenty of resources for you to delve deeper into the areas you decide might work for you. Great value for the price, hell you can't buy anything accept crap from the Dollar Store for 99 cents.
