i found the gloria record a while ago and when i heard they were releasing their first full length, that was it. i was totally excited and i got the morning of april 6th. needless to say, it was not anything like what i had pictured it to be and after the first spin, i was disapointed. 2nd spin, i was blown away. this album is more listenable to folks like myself because of its variety. everything sounds totally different. sure i've got my favorites, but this one is one of the albums that flows really really well together. ambulance is my favorite, but everything's awesome. i found myself getting tired of the lull in traffic EP because there is very little variety. this is the most layered and interesting album i've gotten in years. do this up and coming band a favor and pick this up. you'll be happy you did.

"Start Here" is a truly revolutionary album. The Gloria Record have spent a long time working on this record and it definitely shows. The production is spot on, with hundreds of subtleties working in the foreground and background (whether they be synthetic sounds, vocals, guitars, whatever), the songs are well written, well performed and by far outshine anything the band have written previously (although their previous work is excellent!)

It's hard to pick stand out tracks, as each one is special in its own way. I will say though, that the songs I find myself returning to over and over again are "Cinema Air", "The Immovable Motorist" and "I Was Born In Omaha".

Even though it is still April now, I can safely say that "Start Here" is quite possibly the best album to be released this year.

ill tell you one thing right now, if your not into feeling very sad while listening to music, then maybe these guys aren't for you. but the sadness of this albulm, is what sometimes makes music what it should do to you. music, at least i believe, should have a large emotional impact on you, that can leave you stunned it's that good. i mean yes music thats just listenable bcause it's happy is great, but i find the lasting value on those types of music are nothing in comparison to the emo/indie scene, or whatever you want to call it (underground scene). some of my personal favorites include," I was born in Omaha,ambulance, and salvation army", but they are all amazing. im also a huge fan of mineral, and old gloria record, and i dont know what all you other reviewers are talking about gloria record's change sounding too different, because the roots are still there whether the layering and keyboarding hides it or not.

If you're looking for a beautiful and soulful music experience, then look no further, "Start Here." Just when you start to think that The Gloria Record was no more, they come back with an exceptional new album, that finds ways to touch in places you never knew you had. As soon as I heard that Gloria Record was coming to town, I put down everything that I was doing and headed to the show. Before the band even started to perform I decided to purchase this CD, with no clue how it was going to sound. (Little did I know I was buying the CD from Chris Simpson directly.) Well, needless to say, the chance was worth taking. True, The Gloria Record did go through some changes between "A Lull In Traffic" and this album, but only for the better. I think they've grown over this time, shedding their former "I feel like giving up image" and replacing it with a "Get up, you're not quite dead" positive outlook on life. Excuse the term, but "emo" of late is not about loosing youself in depression. We're not "goth" here, that died long ago. From Mineral to The Gloria Record, Chris Simpson has proved that there is more to life then pain. Thank you, Chris.

I used to really love this album, and it might just change your life, however, its not for evertone. Most people I have played it for hated guys voice. Sometimes I do too, but it feels sincere so I get over it. I really dont think that this is sad music. It is just right. I like the way they rock on a build up. I was born in Omaha is a perfect example of that. Solid lyrics too. I would probably compare them too Idaho and maybe a pinch of the Appleseed Cast. Definitely worth your time if you dont mind shaky vocals at times.

A true return to old school emo in the vein of sunny day real estate ala the Diary LP2 era. Ambulance makes me want to cry eveytime i listen to it.

The voice kills the album. I have tried to "get used to it" but no deal. Its just an average sound, and a below average voice. If you can get it for a dollar, then its worth the name on your ipod. Anything more than a buck, you're better off buying a burger instead.

From the very opening to this albumn to the last note my attention is completely focused on listening. I bought this as soon as it came out and here I am, exactly 9 months later to this day of listening and I am still in awe of what an accomplishment this undertaking was. In this albumn, The Gloria Record makes as much use out of keyboards as Sigur Ros, while keeping the songs in the indie-rock genre. This is one of the albumns where the more you listen to it, the more you pick up and notice what you hadn't before. Aren't those the best? I highly recommend this to anyone I have me and will to those who I will eventually meet. Buy this albumn.

HATED THIS CD as much as a Lull in Traffic.

You listen to this and you'll see that there is NO vocal treatment variation ... That equals BORING!!!

The rest of the CD, ie. the lyrics and instrumentation, may have been phenominal, but I wouldn't know because without a good singer and good vocal treatments, you've got nothing. That's what this CD has, NOTHING. Nothing good going on here. Don't waste your time and money!
