This book just isn't that great. I never like bad reviews that don't give
details, so here goes: I've been in business for a year, doing well, and learned
the basics from a previous book. I bought this one, too, because I thought there
might be other information.
The author didn't explain how to price products, just said to "include
everything." Then she says to use a cake matrix which she doesn't explain
further. But go to her website and for a hefty monthly membership fee she
provides it. Smells like a scam.
And the only thing she says about bookkeeping is to find a software program.
Good thing I already bought another book. That's how I learned to set up my
business books.
Also the author, a supposed expert, says don't do wholesale. That's unsound
advice and can cost you business. Most of my business is wholesale.
On the plus side, the interviews with home-based bakers are okay and probably
help to sell books to their friends and family. But interviews are for websites
and magazines, not in a book I paid for.

This book was just what I was looking for. I have been researching starting a home based bakery for a few months now and this book really helped me. It brought up things that I did not think about and elaborated on things I had questions about. But I would suggest reading, as a companion book from the same series, HOW TO START A HOME BASED BUSINESS by Bert Holtje & Susan Shelly. It is the more technical side of starting any home based business. The two together are the perfect combination.

Although a decent book, as a person who read all of the home based baking books before opening my own business, I will have to comment that the books by Mimi Fix are much more all-encompassing. Fix's book alone is excellent, and in my opinion, the best in overall information. She even shares her best recipes. But the CD-ROM that is included with Ms. Fix's book is a wealth of information and valuable forms to get your business started, making the combination by Fix a great value. I am now reading and enjoying Fix's second book, filled with her tried and true recipes. The tips alone have saved me so much time and money, even though my business is doing well.
