CD-ROM not for Macs,
This review is from: Start & Run an Art Teaching Business (Start & Run a) (Start and Run a...) (Paperback)
This book would be of more value if the CD-ROM ran on the Macintosh platform as well.
As to the book itself, the business information was very general in nature (and there was very little about the advantages/disadvantages as far as setting up how you did business--sole proprietor vs. LLC for example), and there was not enough specialized info on teaching art in particular that one could use to differentiate their business from anyone else's. If the general business info were not taking up space, the art teaching info could be contained in a small pamphlet. And perhaps that's because when you get right down to it, what makes a good art or music teacher is not really something you can get out of a book, and especially not this one. She talks about hiring teachers--well, no one can really teach a particular style of art the way the original teacher can, because art is a subjective thing, it's not like giving swimming lessons. Do people want to learn from you personally, or will they be happy paying top dollar learning from just anybody who is licensed by you when, btw, there are tons of educational art shows free on PBS? Check out from the library, before buying.

Great Little Motivator,

This review is from: Start & Run an Art Teaching Business (Start & Run a) (Start and Run a...) (Paperback)
I found this book very helpful because it led me to a place where I was ready to start my art business. Although I have painted for many years, it answered many questions I had about what I needed to do to get ready. It is written clearly and succinctly and shares stories that are true to life.
Not only does it get you started with the questionnaires to see if you are the entrepreneur type, it tells you how to become that person. It gives you insights into various types of children that you may meet, the types of classes you can offer and how best to serve them and get them coming back to you. The are sections on the business plan when it is time for you to get money and how to prepare yourself for the business and the bank. She is clear about the needs for branding your business and being involved in your community and being well organized. It is a matter of fact book, a boon to a beginner, and a good way to gauge where you are in your set up. Also becoming aware of the many other books in her bibliography is helpful too. I enjoyed it - a quick read and lots of informationStart & Run an Art Teaching Business (Start & Run a)

Covers the basics but cd-rom adds little value,
By Marie in NYC "Marie in NYC" (New York) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Start & Run an Art Teaching Business (Start & Run a) (Start and Run a...) (Paperback)
I'm a needlecrafts entrepreneur [...] and am always looking for more information that can help my very young business. I had high expectations for this book because I see a lot of crossover between art teaching and crochet teaching (which I do). The book covers some of the basics addressed in any "start a business book" (e.g., surveys to see if you are entrepreneurial, etc.). It does a good job of discussing issues related to teaching children and has suggestions for camps, parties, and a small section on working with special needs children. There is little about teaching adults, and no creative ideas about adult themed activities. The cd-rom is disappointing. It includes forms but none of them are actually formatted which to me is the main reason I would want to use pre-existing forms. Overall the book has some good points but wasn't what I was looking for, and it almost wasn't worth including the cd-rom.

This book can help with any business,
This review is from: Start & Run an Art Teaching Business (Start & Run a) (Start and Run a...) (Paperback)
This book is very detailed and does a great job of covering every aspect of running a business, particularly art classes. It's very easy to understand, and the personal stories and examples included also add more interest and understanding to the discussed topics. The quizzes are great, and they helped me learn more about myself.
